Where I muse about Old Sledge, the band Chance McCoy was in prior to joining Old Crow Medicine Show. Originally posted at http://atruersound.com/?p=2728
Old Sledge was a band I discovered last year after they had already split up. Now that may not seem so bad, but the cruel irony is that for a time they were based just over the ridge from me and played many frequent shows at local fine dining and fine music establishment The Palisades in Eggleston, VA.
I first heard of them from Ben Townsend of The Fox Hunt who played on their 2011 album "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down", which is pictured to your left there. That album blew me away right off the bat with the rousing opening track Danville Girl (stream/buy here).
The nucleus of Old Sledge was Chance McCoy (as featured in the previous post), Anna Roberts-Gevalt (also from a previous post) and Sabra Guzman. As stated in the last post, Chance is now the newest member of Old Crow Medicine Show, and Anna, who had left the band prior to the recording of Don't Let Your Deal Go Down, is currently involved with many projects including the wonderful Anna and Elizabeth, co-hosting the delightful Floyd Radio Show (also with Elizabeth, new season begins Sept. 8th and I urge everyone to stream it or better yet see it live if you can) and helping put together the recently released compilation New Young Fogies highlighting the best young talent in traditional music (which I have yet to hear, but have heard rave reviews). Sabra is currently DJing on WTJU in Charlottesville, VA and is currently in the band The Long Branch Ramblers with Ben Townsend and fiddler Aaron Lewis (no not the douche from staind), which I plan on catching next week.
Now, the point of this post, to show some awesome Old Sledge videos, so without further delay, here they are performing the title track, Don't Let Your Deal Go Down with Chance doing the lead vocals:
Here they are performing Danville Girl along with Ben Townsend on banjo:
and finally here they are doing St. James Infirmary with Sabra on vocals:
Bonus vid: Here they are doing one of my favorite Ola Belle Reed songs "Undone In Sorrow"
