As you may (or may not) know, Patty Griffin released her first ever gospel album, Downtown Church back in January, featuring collaborations with folks like Buddy Miller, Emmylou Harris, Jim Lauderdale, and others. It's a beautiful and artfully recorded album (check out Steve Leftridge's full review) and an excellent next step in Griffin's career.

We like it so much, we'd like to give away 10 autographed copies to members of the ND community. All you have to do to enter this contest is to leave a comment on this blog post telling us what your all-time favorite Patty Griffin song is, and why. Your entry must be posted as a comment on this post. Entries posted in separate blog posts, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere else, will not be counted.

My favorite Patty Griffin song is "When It Don't Come Easy." It's a quiet and beautiful song. I like it because it makes me want to love people more--fully and honestly.

Probably Top of the World because it is so powerful... but honorable mention would be "I Write the Book" from Legacy II: a Collection of Singer Songwriters (1992). That was the first time I heard Ms. Griffin.

While I already have the album, I'll give it away if I win the autographed copy. BTW, I have 4th row center seats for one of her NYC shows at Town Hall!

Oh man, "Trapeze". It tells me to lay down my burdens and past indiscretions and just be.

I really love "Trapeze" too!! Very good song.

"Moses" - might be cliche to pick the first song off the first record, but talk about coming out of the gate with everything you got. Every single line feels perfect, and you can never stop listening to Griffin after you hear her voice that first time.

My favorite Patty Griffen song is Useless Desires. The lyrics, powerful, the music soaring, it has the best of Patty all summed up in one song.

"All Creatures Of Our God and King", the last track on Downtown Church. THE BEST POLICY: I'm always looking for good gospel stuff, and searching around here I found reference to this album, which I've listened to on myspace. Can't afford a copy right now. Otherwise, I'm afraid I don't know much about Patty. I am, however, a willing pupil. Excuse my ignorance and thank you.
Amy Nazarov Comment by Amy Nazarov on April 26, 2010 at 2:17pm
Gosh, I would have to say "Long Ride Home." The way Patty creates and inhabits the character of the old man filled with regret in the hours after his wife's burial is so poignant. And the way the song builds to a crescendo, then dies back down to a simple guitar motif, only enhances the emotion.

Heavenly Days - because I get to hear her let go and sing a love song, about her dog no less. Full of joy, respect and companionship.
