After announcing via Twitter that Paste was looking for editorial interns earlier this week, my friend who is an Assistant Editor there tweeted that she guessed she was in the market for a new job. Then this today, from the AP:

ATLANTA — The music monthly Paste magazine is shuttering its print publication after struggling financially for more than a year.

Editor-in-chief Josh Jackson said Wednesday that the magazine based in suburban Atlanta will keep its popular website going but will stop sending print editions to its more than 200,000 subscribers.

Last year, the magazine asked readers to donate money to help it stay afloat. That drew thousands of dollars. Jackson says the donations helped delay the inevitable, after advertising revenue dropped.

Paste started as a website in 1998 and was first published on paper in 2002. Each monthly edition includes articles and photos on music, film and culture, plus a CD with songs from up-and-coming artists.

---

I'm having trouble finding any admission to that end on the Paste website, but the AP is a fairly reliable source, generally. So, I'll go ahead and wish the fine folks at the magazine well in their new online-only venture. Sad to see another magazine bite the dust. But, I suppose the future happens one thing at a time, no?

Paste took over the remainder of the No Depression print subscriptions until those subscriptions lapsed. I'd never read Paste until the first issue came in lieu of ND, and it paled in comparison, format and content. It was a 5 minute skim and toss vs hours spent reading ND. I wondered then why/how Paste was still printing where ND was going web only, so this comes as no surprise, other than it taking this long. It will be interesting to see how far their donations carry them and whether they convert to a parallel of this ND website.

From the Paste website this afternoon:

Today Paste Media Group announces, with deepest sadness, the suspension of the Paste magazine print product.

Struggles with mounting debt were made public last year when our readers responded with generosity to save the magazine. But the prolonged downturn of the ad market has forced a hiatus. All subscribers have access to the digital version of their magazines through the June/July issue on PasteMagazine.com. Paste, while considering strategic alternatives, is focusing on its digital assets, including PasteMagazine.com.

We thank all of those who have shown such tremendous support to a vision of independent media focused on Signs of Life in Music, Film & Culture, including subscribers, advertisers, writers, photographers, illustrators, publicists, record labels, movie studios, book & game publishers and others in the press.

Never read the print magazine but do go their website from time to time, mainly for info on new releases. Their reviews of the latest Los Lobos and John Hiatt albums were fairly dismissive. Made me think that I might not be hip enough for them.

It was inevitable. The mag was really cool when it first started and was all music. When it expanded into movies, books and culture, it really went downhill. I'm not blaming them, they had to do it to try to stay alive and try to get non-music related advertising. I work at a major metropolitan newspaper so those kinds of struggles are part of our almost daily conversations.
For those seeking music content, check out my free online mag Modern Acoustic. I do it as a hobby, 4 issues a year, and do it all myself. It won't replace Paste, but it's one more way to get some music into your life.

The only time I ever read Paste was when ND sent me a couple copies to fill out my subscription when they demised. For the record: I was not impressed or enlightened. I would have rather gotten a tee-shirt......
