No Depression on The Roadhouse radio show this week:

In-Studio at KEXP-FM in Seattle, July 8, 2009
Featuring No Depression publisher Kyla Fairchild and porch-style performances from Sera Cahoone, Star Anna, and Zoe Muth. The live air date is Wed., July 8, 6-9pm PST on 90.3 FM in Seattle, and the entire show will be available from the KEXP streaming archive afterward at www.kexp.org

We’ll set-up the ramshackle studio with acoustic guitars, old wooden chairs, sweet ice tea, and open mics, as three of my favorite local singers - Sera Cahoone, Star Anna, and newcomer Zoe Muth – will play live.

This joint in-studio performance is a preview for the highly anticipated No Depression Festival at Marymoor Park.

At last! An open-air roots music festival in Seattle (Redmond actually) – a town well deserving. As many of you who live here know, when the weather is nice, it’s really nice. The summer is already phenomenal and the No Depression Festival is sure to be an epic event. I can feel it. (Oh, by the way, the forecast for festival day is sunny with a high of 80 degrees.)

It kicks off at 1pm and goes to 10pm. The line-up is solid. Performing are Gillian Welch, Iron & Wine, Justin Townes Earle, Patterson Hood, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Jesse Sykes, and Zee Avi. Also, early in the day, a loose collection of local singers artists will represent how good we’ve got it here. A bunch great players – Jeff Fielder, Ty Ballie, Erik Eagle, and Rebecca Young – will back up some of our best – Mark Pickerel, Sera Cahoone , Star Anna, Kristen Ward, Ian Moore, Zoe Muth, and members of North Twin and The Maldives. For me, this will be best part of the day.

As I’ve said many times, the Seattle and Portland roots music scenes are bursting with goodness as of late. A bunch of new blood and young bohemians have been reaching back, checking out old folk and classic country music, and writing great songs. And canceling appointments with the barber. I like it.

In honor of all of this, during the first hour of my radio show (6-7pm) this Wednesday, No Depression publisher Kyla Fairchild will join me to discuss the festival and her experience as she’s metamorphosed her print publication into a digital community. Then we’ll sit down with Sera, Star, and Zoe and discuss the burgeoning Northwest roots scene. They’ll play songs from their latest records and give us a little preview of what we can expect at the festival on Saturday. It’ll be round-robin, open mic style. They’ll each play one original and one cover, inspired by the music discussed over the course of No Depression’s 13 years in print and its past year online. Check it out. Roots Radio!
