Introducing the No Depression Listening Club

Remember in the old days when people got together at someone's house and had listening parties? When music was something you went to the store to buy, on big vinyl discs, packed in big cardboard sleeves adorned with large, well-intentioned cover art and liner notes, etc? Just because you don't have to go to the record store to by music anymore (though we encourage doing so) doesn't mean you can't enjoy listening parties.

So, may we introduce the first round trial of a No Depression Listening Club? Here's how it'll work. I'll suggest an album/disc/record/download/whatever it's called now. Then, you folks go get the music at a store or however you want to get it. Listen to it, mull it over, spin it a few times. Then come back here and tell us what you think. Discuss it in the comments, take it into the forum, or, if you have that much to say, write your own blog post about it. The whole point is to just gather together and explore music together. Ya dig?

Since this was Scott Porad's idea, I handed it back to him and asked him to request the album we'll use to inaugurate this little listening club. His response: "Oh, that's easy: Sky Blue Sky by Wilco. It's been solid #1 in my rotation for at least 6 months."

So, go to it. Sky Blue Sky is our pick of the month for June. I'm giving you an early start since it's a holiday weekend and it's the first round of ND Listening Club. Feel free to make suggestions for July.

Would it be silly to do Wilco (the album) next month? It comes out June 30th...

Love the idea. When my nieces and nephews say they're going to listen to music together they all put on their I-pods and they each listen to different tunes. Sharing is'nt quite the same anymore. Maybe I'm getting old, but few of my friends seem to take an interest in music the way we used to. I still get a thrill hearing something new. For most people my age it seems the thrill is gone. Is it me? Have I simply not "grown up"? Hope I never do if it means I can't get excited about music. "Sky Blue Sky" may not be a recent release but it sure is a great CD to start the listening club with. Jeff Tweedy keeps getting better as a songwriter. The addition of Nels Cline takes the band to a whole new level. I would never have expected , having heard some of Nels solo work, that he would ever fit in what is basically a rock 'n roll band. Fit he does. Favorite tune, "Impossible Germany". Nels proves less IS more. The rest of the band keeps expanding their boundaries too. Of course the rest of the band keeps changing too. Is John Stirrat the only guy Jeff has kept for more than 2 releases? Jeff's great at not repeating the past. Surprisingly he keeps finding people that work. DocTed's right too. Their Austin City Limits set was a highlight of the ACL season. No bad songs on the CD. Starts out nice and gentle with "Either Way" . Love the wordplay in "You Are My Face" . Empathize with "Hate it Here". Is she coming back ,maybe. Is this a definate "breakup" song or an "I really miss you" song? "Walken" is a nice little ditty that ends up rockin' out. And I think "What Light" is the best "be yourself, don't worry what the world thinks " song I've heard in a long time. All in all "Sky Blue Sky" has become my favorite Wilco work and made the top of my "best of" list for '07. Can't wait for the new one. I thought losing Uncle Tupelo was going to be a bad thing. Turns out we got two better bands. Which reminds me , Jay Farrar's new Son Volt CD should be coming out soon too. A friend's heard some tracks and says it's a killer too.
