Music lovers in Austin should not be home on a Wednesday night in the summer; there are many choices for sure. Last night Jack and I decided we needed to go home with the armadillo, and headed down to Hill’s Café to see Gary P. Nunn. We are glad we did.

This old South Congress restaurant venue, coupled with our local KVET radio station, puts on some classic shows while broadcasting them simultaneously. The crowd didn’t need much motivation on the applause and cheering parts.

Young and old alike came to see this Texas Hall of Famer as he and his 3-piece band played many songs from his new CD, Taking It to the Country, along with many, many hits from all his other historical recordings. To name just a few of the songs we heard -- with the younger people singing along just as much as those of us who go way back to his early days – there was London Homesick Blues of course, What I Like About Texas, Friends for Life, Macho Man in Taco Land, My Kind of Day on Padre, The A-O Train, Reggae Armadillo, a heartfelt The Last Thing I Needed, The First Thing This Morning, and at least 5 songs from the new CD -- all good, all high energy.

Derek Groves on guitar was fantastic. There was also Beau Johnson on drums and Bracken Hale on bass, and everybody sang. These guys know how to have fun, and the audience feels it.

Also worth a strong mention was the opening act with Weldon Henson. I imagine we’ll be seeing him around for a while too.
