Crooked Still live at the Freight and Salvage 11/21/09

A stunning gig tonight from the quintet that knows how. Crooked Still sold out the new and significantly expanded Freight and Salvage Coffee House. Standing room is much bigger at the new freight and it was filled too. The band has been touring at a breakneck pace criss crossing oceans every few weeks for months on end. Its surprising they can keep up this pace and still play highly energetic shows consistently.

The set list contained most of the songs CS fans want to hear. Orphan Girl, Golden Vanity, Captain Captain, Darlin' Corey, Come on in my Kitchen, Ecstacy, When First unto this Country, Oxford Town, Little Sadie. Several new tunes were played including an original by Aoife about a camping experience at Grey Fox, a large bottle of Whiskey and an all night jam.

The real show stopper was the encore of "You Got the Silver". Its one of my all time favorite Stones songs and they nailed it.

They are heading into the studio in December to make the new record. Expect great things from this young hungry string band.

I saw them in Seattle when they passed through here last week and they played a great set to a PACKED enthusiastic room on a drizzly Tuesday night.

Thanks for reviewing this show--I missed it because I was across the bay out in West Marin at Rancho Nicasio listening and dancing to the twangy, honky-tonkin' tunes of Jim Lauderdale backed up by the stellar California country-rockers Rancho Deluxe. An amazing show, and plenty of room on the dance floor! But nobody tops Crooked Still at what they do, and I can only hope they get back to the SF Bay Area soon, and, come to think of it, when is the Still going to play Hardly Strictly Bluegrass?
