Listening to Small Cities' debut full-length, Jackson Purchase, the impression I get is one of a completely American band (won’t my face be red if I find out their drummer is from Toronto or something). It’s the sort of music you don’t really need to categorize. Is it twang? Is it indie rock? Who cares? Just spread the word that there’s a party at the moon tower.
The Tom Petty comparisons are probably ubiquitous, so I won’t do more than mention it in passing, but they really do throw off that 1970s summertime vibe. Small Cities comes to Pittsburgh from various points southward (Alabama and Kentucky, among others) and have made their mark in other Pittsburgh bands as well. Liz Adams plays bass in Lohio and Teal Fitzpatrick has been known to sit in with The Harlan Twins. Their catchy opener “Cannonball” is probably the best song on the record. And please don’t forget to invite me to all of your summertime keggers.
