A Conversation with Photographer Adam Smith

I had the pleasure of great conversation with photographer Adam Smith this past Memorial Day weekend. Smith has captured more images through his lens than most folks double his age have gawked at. The 38-year-old Macon, Ga., native has photographed images featured as album art for Delta Blues legend Junior Kimbrough and country music statesmen Marty Stuart and Porter Wagoner.  If for some reason that doesn’t strike your fancy, he’s done the same for the Drive-By Truckers and…

This Is American Music is taking over the South one band at a time

This Is American Music (TiAM) is a record label that is more of a family than a business. Don’t get me wrong, when it comes to music they are all business but the folks involved let their love of great tunes shine through which, in my opinion, is one reason they have become so successful. Started by Corey Flegel, and a close…

Gilded Palace Radio Show (March 25th 2013) - Session with Dave Harding (Richmond Fontaine)

It can’t be easy making your way as a songwriter, let alone striking out after a successful stint as a ‘mere’ musician in a band. So, I guess you’d have nothing to lose by compounding the above and moving five thousand miles to start a life in a new country. Dave Harding would know… he’s done just that.

Americana Rock Mix: Episode 141 – Long Live You And Me

Not really much to talk about this week. I’ve been playing the hell out of “Long Live All Of Us” by Glossary, so that thought something from that would be a great bookend to this episode. Enjoy!

Country Fried Rock Radio Episode #1220 Glossary

Glossary is one of those bands that several other bands have mentioned in interviews as being their favorite band.  Oddly, that's become Glossary's calling card: your favorite band's favorite band...that you've never heard of.  Songwriter Joey Kneiser even sums it up, "Your fans are out there.  They just don't know you exist yet."  For a band who has been together at its core since the mid-1990's and released several albums to critical…

Couch by Couchwest Day 5 Highlights

No raucous afterparty last night - we were just short staffed. Our lousy intern Toby stopped showing up and we got backlogged with videos. It's so hard to find good help these days.

Day 5 (Thursday, March 15) started out with an amazing SXSW parody/James Taylor cover by Tyler Stenson of Portland, Oregon. You can stream some of his "real" music on his…

Yeah, yeah. It's that time of year again. Everyone is doing it, and so am I. My top albums of 2011.

This was a really tough list to gather. 2011 was crammed with amazing music, so that just made the decision making that much harder.

34 people e-mailed and messaged me with suggestions of what my final top number should be this year. Suggestions ranged from "Top 10" to "Top 53"! That wasn't going to happen anyway. But the most common number suggested was "Top 24".

I didn't…

My Interview with Todd Beene of Lucero and Glossary

Lucero have long been one of my favorite bands. Ben Nichols’ voice and song-writing tug at my heart strings like no other, and the band’s willingness to deviate from “the path” (both musically and career-wise) have earned them my deepest respect and loyalty. I’ve had the pleasure of…

Announcing the SxSW day party lineup:

As anyone who got within earshot of me can attest, by the end of SxSW last year I had had it. Austin had defeated me. I was tired of being drunk, tired of walking and just plain tired. In a word, I was done.

Well. Flash forward almost a year and I'm preparing to go do back an do the battle of attrition once again and we're bringing the party back! This year not only is the party actually located downtown, it's also gonna be two days and featuring plenty on… Continue
