Nina Hoffert 20th Annual Rocky Mountain Folks Festival: Not folk. Folks.

This is fourth in a series of blogs on the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival by mother/daughter team Nina Hoffert and Rhonda Barton. Nina: So we're starting to get a little tired by now. It really has more to do with sitting in the intense sun for hours every day rather than staying up particularly late. Meadow Park campground is generally considered the "quiet" campground by Planet Bluegrass Festivarians. I'm grateful for that. Day 2 of the festival is rocking on. I'm sitting in t… Continue

Loudon Temple Furnace Mountain Lands Bob Harris Radio Session

Virginian band Furnace Mountain will record a session with legendary BBC Radio 2 presenter Bob Harris when they arrive in the UK later this year. Whispering Bob fell in love with the band’s Fields of Fescue album on its release late in 2009, telling listeners it was “wonderful” and featuring tracks over four successive weeks. The band has travelled far and wide - as far as China – to take their distinctive brand of American roots music out into the world. But when the four-piece arrives in the… Continue

Conqueroo Band of Heathens offers free download: Just your average catchy summer oil spill song

Touring behind current album One Foot in the Ether, Austin band is on the road all summer and fall, with appearance at Lollapalooza AUSTIN, Texas — While the Band of Heathens’ new song “Free Again” will keep fans happily humming and tapping, it will probably raise some eyebrows as well. The track — available for free on the band’s web site on July 15 — references the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. “It’s sure to be the feel-goo… Continue

Jeff Stampes Folks Festival

Has there ever been an upcoming event that you should be completely jazzed about, but you just aren't? Maybe worse than just not being excited, you think you don't want to go? No matter how you think about it, it makes no sense, but that knowledge doesn't comfort you much when you observe yourself actively resisting attending an event you would LOVE. Maybe you have no clue what I'm talking about...but if you do, then you know how I feel about Folks Fest. For no good reason, I've never wanted t… Continue

Michael Brewer The Folks Festival-Great Expectations of what it will and won't be!

It is with genuine excitement that I look forward to the Folks Fest in Lyons, CO, Aug. 13-15, 2010. The wonderful festivals presented by the crew at Planet Bluegrass were some of my earliest festival experiences, pre-dating many of the mega festivals that exist now. I do not spend the summer following the festival circuit, but spend hard earned funds and vacation time from work attending several events that are held a reasonable distance from home. Some of these are held by promoters other than… Continue

Mr Edyoulis Handicapping Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2010

The good folks at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass are delaying the official lineup announcement this year. This is probably in hopes of keeping massive crowds at bay. But gleaning sources internal and external has revealed some tantalizing confirmed artists. This years lineup will contain the reggies, Emmylou, Steve Earle, Del McCoury, Hazel Dickens, and Earl Scruggs. New and exciting additions this year include David Grisman Quintet, Sh… Continue

Are you kidding me??? Planet Bluegrass ROCKS!!!! I just got back from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival for the first time and WOW! is all I can say. What fun!!! This was my first vacation in over 8 years since before my sons were born. Alison Krauss and Union Station was worth all the money, time, and effort spent!!!!!!! Mr Edyoulis Telluride House Band closes it out with a bang

As the temperature sank Sunday night the realization sank in. Telluride 2010 was just about history and the majority of us would go back to our cubefarms in a day or so with just memories. But first there was a mighty powerful mood elevator; the epic final set by the Telluride House Band. Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck,… Continue

Mr Edyoulis Telluride Day 4 - Home stretch

The set yesterday afternoon with Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer typifies the outstanding quality of musicianship that saturates this festival. The trio started out with a tune called "Bubbles" which like all of their compositions demanded close and careful listening. Edgar's surgically precise bass playing fit well with Zakir's lightning fast fingers on the tablas. To witness the three pre-eminent masters of their particular instruments playing at the absolute limit of human capacity… Continue

Mr Edyoulis Telluride Day 4 There must be something in the water.

The extraordinary and surprising band mutations have taken a serious uptick. First it was the Jerry Douglas, Viktor Krauss, Omar Hakim trio mysteriously turning into a quintet with the addition of Alex Hargreaves and Bryan Sutton for a version of Edgar Meyer's "Unfolding". Bryan exited and Bela sat in for a version of "Pushed Too Far". Bela stayed on to drive the Chick Corea classic "Spain". Not content to be left out, Peter Rowan and Sam Bush came on stage to sing "Sittin on top of the World".… Continue

Mr Edyoulis Telluride Day 3: Highlights, highjinx, and the No Depression Miracle Ticket

The past few days have included several incredible moments. Unexpected guest artists, wild cover tunes, chance encounters and unforgettable visuals are around every corner in this part of the San Juan Mountains. One image my mind will never erase is a crimson robed Buddhist monk joining the hackey sack circle to the joy of all involved. This cross pollination of cultures is one of the unspoken treasures of the festivarian experience. Musically, the past few days have been staggering. Tim O'Brie… Continue

Mr Edyoulis Telluride day 2: Of strangers and steak, soaring gondolas, and 18 South's New Americana revue

Arriving at Telluride just as the sun was setting on Wednesday night, I stumbled into the campground. Beat after the long drive from Denver, I was laso feeling altitude sickness. Most obvious sites had long been claimed and the party was in full swing. I ambled over to the primitive section and soon found a hedgelike growth with enough room to twist my tent into. After getting the tent up and starting back. My path was blocked by a woman holding a frying pan. "STEAK!",l she exclaimed, "We have e… Continue

Mr Edyoulis Telluride Kickoff, the Running of Tarps, Sarah Jarosz, and more.

Today's schedule looks to be an embarrassment of riches. It starts off with Sarah Jarosz and finishes with a huge bang; Dave Rawlings Machine, Del McCoury, AKUS, and Tim O'Brien. With no breaks longer than half an hour between sets, it will be an endurance test when the temps plunge after nightfall. But first we need to talk tarps. The tarp sprint takes place each morning just as the gates open. Folks who have stayed in line overnight surge onto the field to claim choice spots. The crazed dash… Continue
