The Medicine Show Presents
The Belladrum Tartan Heart Fringe is the best two weeks to be in The Highlands. It takes place last week of July first week of August in pubs, village halls, bar bee q's, a farm yard festival and house concerts, all over the region, all in the most beautiful surroundings possible, culminating in 3 days of music on nearly 10 stages, at the wonderful Belladrum Festival, where the fringe has our own stage. The Square Wheels Cycles Potting Shed Stage. This year is dedicated to the memory, music and social legacy of Woody Guthrie, in his centennial year, we will be encouraging the singing of his songs where ever possible. We have a distinctive Texas Fried Flavour with the return of Texas Tim Scott and the first appearance of The (mighty) O's, we have a very strong local (particular Ross-shire presence), and particularly with Martin Stephenson's Barbaraville Records recording artists Red Hook Rapids and MIR (featuring the great man on guitar) Invergordon's Defcon One and Davy Cowan also flying the flag. Look out for Leah from south of the border down Nairn way, I think she is the best Blues voice to come out for Scotland in many years (and proudly comes from my home town) , Isaac Sutherland the power house guitarist from the Northland's, we have a Yorkshire tribute to the late great Ronnie Lane (Kuschty Rye) and 4 great bands from The Highland capital. All the info is mapped out with links bellow. Some of these artists will be touring the Highlands before Belladrum i'm very please to say. More Fringe dates to follow, its all very exciting for this pilgrim i can tell you have a great festival.Rob Ellen

The Potting Shed Stage is a highlight of mine purely for its atmosphere and eclectic mix of people, bands, beers and hats. Its seen local heroes to country cousins from waaaaay across the pond grace its boards in past years. As far as interesting mixes go, this year will be no exception by the looks of the lineup. This is not just any old stage or main stage or deadwood stage – this is an event within an event – this is Medicine Show country !! Yee,and indeed, Haw !! We present two his latest prodigy's. Ally MacLeod & Donald Forbes are Red Hook Rapids and will release their first band album in June of this year on
Barberaville Records. Ally's first solo and (radio hit) album Astor Place, which features Donald, and was produced and mentored by Martin, reached 16 in the Euro Free Form Broadcasters Chart, made the top 20 in the FAR world wide Free Form Broadcasters chart, is still in the top 20 of The French Americana Chart, achieving airplay (and sales) across all territories including The USA, and BBC Radio Ulster, Radio Wales and of coarse BBC Radio Scotland where doyen Scottish broadcaster Iain Anderson has strapped himself firmly to their mast.
but firstly MIR - here's what Martin says about Miriam Campbell
“born... downpatrick co down n ireland family....mum musical, singing piano, jaws harp, mouthorgan. dad banjo and mandolin. brother guitar influences...patsy cline, aretha franklin, pj harvey, maybelle carter, johnny cash, i could go on but i won`t appeal....i would want to appeal to anyone and everyone, to have someone listen to a track and put a smile on their face or stir an emotion inside and go with it would be quality. fav female singer...patsy cline first time sang... about 3 or 4, there was always music played in our house, in times of trouble, births, family parties, sang in choirs and gaelic mod all the way through primary and academy. most important.....family how want music to develop...in layers to show how i have grown as a person and to get better notice a change in 2012.....lots of exciting artists just now, a great big mix. lots of people going back
to their roots ”— Martin Stepehenson
Des Horsfall’s Kuschty Rye 4.30 - 5.15 http://www.kuschtyrye.net/
"Are you all sitting two square firmly on your botys? Then I'll begin". Once upon a time Des Horsfall had a Dream. A Dream about a Musical Key. He foresaw his Rock and Roll Future, and his Inspiration was Ronnie Lane. Like the late great Small Faces and Faces man Ronnie. Des is a quintessential English songster stravager, drawing his influences from Motown to Manchester, Birminghamm England to Birmingham Allabama. like Lain he's under rated and breaking the mould, like Lane he's a great entertainer. Des will take you on a musical journey of discovery using the music of Ronnie lane as sign posts along the way. "Every Good Gentleman's Tonic and a Belladrum must for any fans of The Small faces and The Faces and Slim Chance"
The O's 5.30- 6.15 www.wearetheos.com

They have played from Thurso to Hawaii, and everywhere in between, during these last two years, winning the hearts of all they encounter with their down home humour and hard one harmonies , their rootsy driving dynasisim, and dandy banjo noodleings. Accolades - winning "Best Of's" all around Texas, climbing to #2 album on the Euro Americana charts; being heard all over MTV and the History Channel; to being dangerously handsome and charming (of course). "Book them they will Come, miss them you'll be sorry"
Isaac Sutherland & Hamish Roberts 6.25 - 7.00 http://www.facebook.com/Isaac.D.J.Sutherland
http://www.facebook.com/hamish.roberts1
![]()
They met on the impromptu time on the Potting Shed last year, Isaac doing sound and Hamish wowing the gathering with his gut string guitar wizardry, Isaac sad I want to play with him! it was the start of a beautiful friendship, they took it to the Bute Guitar Festival (where Hamish won open mic competition) they blew away Jazz Space in Inverness and have been doing the very same across venue across the Highlands, don't think it will be much different here.
Impromptu 7.00 - 9.00
This is where the magic happens and is sceduled on the day and a place for the musician to kick around some ideas and just play.
Defcon One 9.00 - 9.30 http://www.defcononeband.com/
Providing the pre-fireworks fireworks renowned for their electrifying, high voltage live performances with a back-bone of pounding drums, bass and guitar-driven energy that bands like The Who were famous for all those years ago. With a set of original and catchy Rock/Pop anthems, and intense lyrical hooks and melodies, Defcon One have the spark that can drive any audience into a dance crazed frenzy, just whats required! "T minus 2 and counting"
Potting Shed All Stars 10.00 - 11.00
And so the finale and finally a chance for the sound crew, the artists in residence and all the other potting shed hipsers flipsters and finger popping daddys to chill out, get down, get dirty (well dirtier) and take it out, in proper party style.
"Who knows what can happen in the next half hour"
