The Medicine Show is touring three leading americana amigos as part of Tartan Heart Fringe this year, (calling in at Southern Fried Festival Perth too) Three of my favourite artists as well as favourite people and going to some of my favourite places. As A.J. might put it "Not Too Shabby"! Rob Ellen .. Find more music like this on Flyinshoes ReviewYears in the making and scheduled for late July / early August 2010, The Strut & Stumble Tour, will find Nels AndrewsA. J. Roach and Ian Thomas Parks travelling and performing together throughout the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The three are close friends and while they have often toured together in pairs, this will be the first ever tour featuring all three of these masterful songwriters. Nels Andrews was born on a US Naval base in Oakland, CA. As a child Nels lived a nomadic life, moving to a new town whenever his father, a US Naval Officer, received a new station. This state of constant movement instilled in Nels a wanderlust that has had a big impact on his adult life. As a young adult Nels worked several seasons -- both in the canneries and on boats -- in Alaska's commercial fishing industry. Later he tried his hand at tree planting in the Black Hills of South Dakota and still later at furniture building in the mountains of New Mexico. Now living in Brooklyn, NY, Nels' musical catalog is overflowing with sketches of the people and places that he has encountered throughout his wanderings. His songs have won prestigious awards from The Kerrville Folk, Telluride, and Mountainstage Newsong festivals, and read like a cultural history of America's downtrodden and disenfranchised. These tales haven't gone unnoticed either. Aside from the aforementioned awards, Nels also held the 1 spot on the Euro-Americana Album Chart for 3 straight months. A. J. Roach was born and raised in Scott County, Virginia -- The cultural and geographical epicenter of America's Appalachian Mountain Range, and the birthplace of American country music. Since leaving home at the age of 17, A. J. has travelled the world writing, recording and performing his music. This relentless touring schedule has paid off. In 2004 he was awarded the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Award. His second full length album reached the 1 spot on both the European-Americana chart in Europe and the Folk and Roots chart in America. In addition, A. J. has had a number of his songs featured in American film and television. As great as the recordings are, nothing compares to seeing A. J. in a live setting. His performances are so powerful that it is commonplace for audience members to be moved to tears. The Glasgow Herald had this to say about one of Roach's recent performances: "Roach took the audience packed into the estimable Fallen Angels Club, on a backwoods travelogue that was virtually a masterclass in illustrating how much sophistication goes into creating so-called primitive music." Ian Thomas Parks originally hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He left at age 16 and struck out on his own to San Francisco where he was a driving force behind that city's underground music scene in the mid-90s. He was a founding member of The Rosemarys, who along with The Brian Jonestown Massacre were among the most popular bands in San Francisco's mid-90s underground dreampop scene. At the turn of the century Ian relocated to Seattle, Washington where he formed the band, An American Starlet. This project moved away from the 'shoegazing' sound of The Rosemarys and effortlessly blended 50s rock'n' roll, 60s folk and 90s grunge with American roots music. The result, 'The Dutchess of Hazard', was stunning and the band soon found themselves charting in the top 15 of both the Americana and the Folk and Roots charts and playing festivals across America. Ian now lives in Los Angeles where he spends his time producing and engineering records in his Frogtown studio. In fact, he produced and engineered A. J.'s latest record 'Revelation'.
