Danny Michel - Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me - EPK

I once spent a weekend at the Vancouver Folk Festival where a couple of the workshops were...let's say, lacklustre. The weather was rainy and wet, so maybe that affected my perception. Who knows. Anyway: suddenly, at one of them Danny Michel took…

Shovels & Rope at the Biltmore Cabaret, April 4, 2013

I'm loathe to miss a good show, but sometimes fortune doesn't shine kindly. The phenomenon known as Shovels & Rope last played Vancouver on August 2nd of 2012, the same night as the phenomenon called Wagons was playing at the Railway Club. We make our choices and I chose the Wagons--a good choice too, since the show I did go to was pretty killer. Sometimes,…

Billy Bragg Live at the Vogue Theatre, April 5, 2013

The show had just started when the text message came in from a singer/songwriter friend: "Drinking game: everytime Billy Bragg expresses a political opinion, do a shot." This elicited a solid chuckle from the group of friends I was sitting with at Vancouver's Vogue Theatre watching Billy Bragg on stage. We were about three songs into the set and it's fair to say that…

Stompin' Tom Connors: 1936 - 2013

Canadians, we're fond of saying, often define themselves as "not Americans." With so much shared culture the line between what's Canadian and what's American can be a blurry one at times. We like hockey a lot more than Americans, we eat more doughnuts and there's always the unexplainable cultural appeal of Tim…

thanks, friend.  i should tell you i was also carrying someone  with me to the show.  i met james back in 1991 at a weekend seminar on traditional folk music and dylan at uvic.  a couple months later 2 shows were announced in seattle at the paramount and james said he couldn't go cuz of his heart condition.  i promised that if he went but needed medical attention, i would get him home, so he agreed.  to show his appreciation, i came home one day to find a box of tapes containing all the shows i had been to up to that point, starting in montreal 1974.  and as a bonus the "royal albert hall", that is to say manchester free trade, concert which he left unmarked so i could jump up crying in surprise when i heard "judas".  in 1997 james had a heart transplant and lived quite well, even catching a few more shows, until his death on october 2nd of this year.  he was in my heart in the vancouver show.

i see you're into all kinds of awesome music and musicians and will appreciate all that brings.
