"....[Manix's] debut digital release EP Emerald City sounds like anything but a freshman effort...I was drawn into this EP by Manix’s warm vocals and production, and I think you will be too." - Fifty Cent Lighter & A Whiskey Buzz

With departures in Americana, country, and rhythm and blues, Emerald City is a collection of simple, honest tunes penned during a difficult time of self-discovery. As Kelly describes, Emerald City was, “birthed from a quarter life crisis.”

Singing professionally since she was 11 in regional theatre and music reviews, Kelly was being pitched to major labels while she was still in high school. After several attempts at securing a deal in Nashville, Kelly studied music business management at university. Before graduation, she was offered a position in new media marketing at a well-established independent label. Kelly’s college career and tenure at the label was of immeasurable worth to a budding independent musician.

“I learned a lot about the new business models that were emerging and that you don’t have to have a major deal to make a great record and get it heard. I also was in awe of the musicianship of the some of the artists I got to work closely with. I definitely was inspired by their art and skill.”

After a health scare and major surgery, life was thrown into a whole new perspective. Kelly began to write on themes that reflected her current experiences: hopelessness and the futility of worry, true love and its tangible expressions, avoiding sedentary living, the sanctity of life, and the hearts’ potential to sometimes divert you away from home

New Income Streams for the Digital D-I-Y Musician

The digital revolution has brought about the age of the DIY musician, or as Sonicbids.com founder Panos Panay calls it, the “artistic middle class.” With technology, artists are able to produce and distribute their work easily while maintaining creative control. But big record labels, despite their floundering, still appear to be the way for an artist to go from anonymity to platinum-selling success. So how is this middle-class musician Panay speaks of making money and supporting his or her… Continue

Kelly is right. This site for example! I want desperately to help artists promote their music to fans who will support them, but it costs money to operate the site. Lost Hills, not sure if you're referring to the 1000 True Fans article I…

I will take a look at the 1,000 fan theory. I in fact said that these would not be significant streams...but supplemental. These are just some new ways of seeing some sort of compensation for your work. And last, I believe you will be hard pressed…

There's a few artists out there who have been kicking around the 1,000 true fan theory or at least a variation. ( I believe for a couple thousand dollars Jeff Black will give you his car so he can have enough to go into the studio again.) If…

Thanks for your post Kelly. I'd be very curious to hear more about what you are learning in the UW masters digital media program so I hope you will continue to use the ND site as a vehicle to put some new ideas and concepts out there for us to…
