"Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder" - Live at Sellersville Theatre - Concert Review, 5/11/13

Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder put on a show to remember before a packed house at the Sellersville Theatre, Saturday night, They played material from all over the place, including their most recent CD. The Crowd was definitely into the show, Skaggs is a real icon in the Bluegrass scene. But, I like how he has experimented with different styles over the years, like the CD that He did with Bruce Hornsby years ago, unlikely ,yet a great listen.  He mixed some slow ballads with a lot of uptempo…See More

Single Review - The Roys "Gypsy Runaway Train"

The Roys new single from their upcoming CD is the title track "Gypsy Runaway Train". This is actually a song about their fans and their relationship with them. It is an upbeat song with Lee singing the lead vocals and Elaine wrapping her wonderful harmonies around Lee's vocals. There is some excellent pickin' by members of Ricky Skaggs Kentucky Thunder, who play on about half of the songs on the new CD,  Cody Kilby plays some lightning fast guitar runs, Randy Kohrs plays some hot Dobro and…See More

CD Review - Mike Aiken "Captains And Cowboys"

This Americana/acoustic sounding CD has some real nice material on it that will put a song in your heart. Most material is written by Aiken himself or with help. This CD is the first CD that Aiken has put some real top professional people in the help and it is an excellent sounding CD. This recording was two years in the making, but is scheduled for release on April 22,2013. It is produced by Aiken, Dan Baird, and Ben Strand. The sound ranges from country, roots and a bit of island sound. It is…See More

The Best Grateful Dead Tribute Band

There is a band that plays music as sweet as the Dead ever did.  The same songs, having Bob Weir and Phil Lesh as members truly helps, they were afraid to get a guitarist that sounded anything like Garcia in the Band they called the Dead, they had Warren Haynes, but it just didn't sound quite right, but with…

CD Review - Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison "Cheater's Game"

This is one of the top CDs that I have heard this year. Before this couple got married, they both had successful solo careers and still do. This is the first CD that they have done together and I think they sound very well singing together, though I'll take Willis singing by herself anyday. I like Bruce's brother Charlie better than Bruce, just a stylistic, talent thing. Bruce is very talented himself.

This is produced by Brad Jones…

CD Review - The Miners "Miners Rebellion"

This group is a Philly Band with a real bend towards the country rock sound and nothing fancy, just original songs by their leader Keith Marlowe. Marlowe seems to have his hand into a little bit of everything.

This six song EP is called Miners Rebellion which is the first track on the CD. Marlowe recorded this album in his basement using an eight track half inch tape reel to reel recorder. The…

"Last Of A Dying Breed" - Lynryd Skynryd

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the most iconic of the Southern Rock Bands from the 70's era still performing today. Not many of the original members still left, I saw the original lineup in June of '77 at RFK stadium in Philly, they were opening for Peter Frampton, but they seemed to be the main attraction. Before them, Dickey Betts and Great Southern and The J Geils Band started the Show. Betts played a short set as he was having trouble with the sound system. It was a real hot day, and…

DVD/CD Review - Rural Rhythm Artists "Christmas The Mountain Way"

This Christmas DVD/CD release by Rural Rhythm Records is a very warm enjoyable experience. It Highlights a lot of their artists and has a couple of really nice original songs. It is recorded in the Bell Theatre in Pineville Kentucky. There is a crew of stage musicians including Jason Burlesn (banjo/guitar), Clint Hurd,(mandolin); Brandon Godman(fiddle), Vic Graves(dobro), and Bryan Turner and John Bradley on bass. A very beautiful and reverent production.…

This CD is a very refreshing  and delightful piece of music. It is recorded in the fairly  traditional bluegrass way. CD Review - Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder "Music To My Ears"

This year has been a time of tremendous releases of Bluegrass  music, this new Disc by Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder being up amongst the  top with some Stiff Competition, like The Roys, The Grascals and The Lonesome  River Band.

I'm a bit partial to this as it is an audiophile recording,It has  been seriously recorded by Skaggs Studio and mastered by Georgetown Masters in  HDCD(Old Haunts of genious "Golden Ears" Denny Purcells, now run by his  apprentice Andrew Mendelson…

PR Release - Webster Pr

Country outlaw Waylon Jennings was working on a new batch of recordings right before he died 10 years ago, and those sessions are at the heart of a final studio collection to be released in September, “Goin’ Down Rockin’: The Last Recordings of Waylon Jennings."

In the studio, he had been working with longtime bassist Robby Turner, but they had recorded only Jennings’ vocals and guitar, and Turner’s bass, with plans to flesh them out with additional instrumentation. Jennings died Feb. 13, 2002 at age 64 of diabetes.

Recently Turner went back to those recordings and brought in former Jennings cohorts -- guitarist Reggie Young, drummer Richie Albright and singer, songwriter and Jennings’ former tourmate Tony Joe White -- to add the sounds Jennings and Turner originally discussed.

Of the dozen songs on “Goin’ Down Rockin',” 11 were written by Jennings, the 12th song being White’s title track. The recordings, slated for release on Sept. 11, have never previously been available to the public.

"Waylon knows he's surrounded by friends and all that hear this will feel as if they know Waylon in all his authenticity,” said his widow, singer-songwriter Jessi Colter, in a statement with the news of the album’s release.

“To me, this is classic Waylon music every bit as good as his '70s classics, but his singing bears a vulnerable and deeply personal touch,” said Mike Jason, senior vice president of retail at Saguaro Road Records, which is putting out the album in conjunction with Time Life Records. “Waylon still has many fans, but with these recordings I’m confident that we’ll introduce him to a new generation in the same way that Johnny Cash’s last recordings found him an entirely new audience.”

Jim - Thanks for reading and for your compliment. I had not heard about a new Waylon release. Will keep an eye out for it. I am moments away from posting Part 6, the final installment in the Waylon article/remembrance.

Hi Jim,

I saw your comment and that you are in Abington. I'm right up the road in Hatboro and am also kind of lamenting not going to see Further Saturday night; next year definitely; they will probably tour in the fall or spring but the Mann is such a great venue I hope they play there again.

Hi Jim,

Thanks so much for the feedback.

I think you would actually find a big difference in sound on your home system as the sound is recorded multi-track and mixed by a studio here before being merged with the video. I can send you one of the shows as an example.

Yes, there's a rotating house band, members of Rocket 88 and Mayhem String Band (either as their full bands or mixed). They start each show with the theme song and a couple others.

Some of the best electric guitar from the shows would be George McConnell, Eric Deaton (backing Shannon McNally), and Robert Turan (backing Tate Moore).

Thanks again, and glad you did find some features you liked.

best,
Daniel

Hi Jim! Good to hear from you. Well maybe I used the wrong word when I said "releasing" a new single before. I don't have a publicist at this time so I am doing it all on my own and I decided to just give away The Ballad of June Bug Lee." I felt as though that song was a gift so I should give it away. In the future though, I am thinking of recording the song, making a live video of it at Kulak's and sending them out together. I THINK I can get singles put up for sale on CDBABY too which means it will be on itunes also. I just don't think people are buying CD's anymore...do you? What are your thoughts on something like this? A lot of my colleagues are releasing singles and down-loadable EPs instead of full length printed CD's. I was also thinking about those download cards to sell at live shows.
This is all very unfortunate I think because I grew up with LP's and all of their glorious wonders!! I love the idea of a full length CD that has a flow and an emotion all it's own..I am sorry that is being lost too.
I would love to hear your thoughts on how to get people to enjoy your music one single at a time.

Thanks!
