Thanks for this post! This man has STILL got it going on! All kinds of energy, swagger and charisma on stage. And he surrounds himself with great players. Love it.

Y'all have reminded me of a great show a few years ago at Fitzgerald's when Ryan Bingham opened for Joe Ely. I'd like to see that show again.

"The Roach Coach" I found this old photo digging through Houston memorabilia. I probably drove this to the Ely show.

Hal: Since I wrote this I've been talking to my brother and others, trying to get a better handle on the timeline. I think that gig was St. Pat's Day, 1981. I remember Kim Wilson of the TBirds being in the audience.

Hey! Iwas at the Leroi Brothers/Joe Ely gig! One night-same time period- Joe showed up at Corky's to play with Herschel Berry and the Natives.  Nice tribute to Joe. I'd recommend Joe's  travelogue "Bonfire of…

Joe Ely: The Lubbock Flash Turns 65

I was living in Holland in 1977 when my younger brother, who had attended Wayland Baptist University on a track scholarship until booze and girls were discovered in his dorm room, came for a visit. While living in Plainview, his stomping grounds had been the gin joints of Lubbock. Upon arrival, he immediately opened his suitcase and pulled out an album he said I had to hear. It was some guy he had seen play in Lubbock who had just put out his first album. It was what is known as Joe Ely's "white…See More

Thanks for the nice article. Joe Ely is a Texas treasure for sure. I enjoy Joe's hard-rockin' band shows and his softer singer-songwriter shows with equal measure. Last nights solo show in Houston reinforced that. That First Joe Ely album…

Thanks, Jack. I agree. If I had grown up around San Antonio, Doug Sahm would be my man,if I had grown up in Fort Worth, well, ten guys would be..... but I grew up in West Texas, and for me it will always be Bob Wills, Hoyle Nix, Buddy Holy,…

First saw Joe when Letter To Laredo came out and many times since.  Whatever the considerable merits of his early records, I don't think he's ever topped that masterpiece.  His band is always top notch. Jesse Taylor was one of a…

Over the weekend we learned of at least one high profile 2012 recording project that involves Houston at least peripherally: local arts patron and charity fundraiser Carolyn Farb will be the executive producer of a Jesse…

Linda Chorney's Ultimate Grammy Scam

As if the Grammys didn't have enough credibility issues, NARAS, the organization that controls the process, has left a loophole large enough for a complete unknown to manipulate her way onto the final ballot in the Americana category.

The news broke two days ago in Variety that virtual unknown Linda Chorney had employed the organization's interactive Grammy 365 site to connect with voting members and get her music…
