Canada's "Tour Tax" is History

Next week Delta Moon will cross the border to Canada to play the Kitchener Blues Festival in Kitchener, Ontario, one of our all-time favorite gigs. Friday and Saturday, August 8 and 9, we'll play four shows in Kitchener. And that's it. We'll turn around and head back to the US. In years past we've enjoyed playing club dates as well as festivals in…See More

Putting the Devil in the Room

The first level a musician goes through is learning to play well. How do I execute this passage? I place this finger here and this finger here. If I practice enough I’ll learn to do it really fast and everyone will be amazed how quickly and accurately I can place my fingers. It’s a narrow focus, all on one’s self. Every musician knows this phase. Some people become expert at it but may play their whole lives and never grow any further. The next level is widening the focus to include the other…See More

New Canadian Rules May End Club Tours by US Bands

The Canadian Minister of Employment, Social Development & Multiculturalism has really done it this time.According to the Calgary Herald, new regulations “could deal a crippling blow to live music at the club level.” Large concerts and music festivals, thank goodness, are not affected. But the new rules hit touring bands like…See More

Soundalikes

The second day of writing a song is the hardest. The first day you just let it flow, but in the second session you have to edit and cut and polish and ask yourself, “Is this really my song? Did  I write it or only remember it?” We've all heard songs that sound like other songs. Some relationships are obvious, like Lady Gaga and Madonna. But sometimes soundalikes reveal surprising connections between artists. The other morning I heard a live version of Jimi Hendrix’s…See More
