No Stress

For over 1,000 years a mill has stood at Obermuhle, near Habach in southern Bavaria. The current house on that spot is 200 years old and contains a music club called the Village. The "chief," Dieter Uebler, inhabits the Village the way a cuckoo inhabits a clock, only he has a lot more to say.It was Dieter who told us the history of the place, and that in the Thirty Years War, the terrible 17th Century conflict between Catholics and…See More

Old Guitars, Road Dogs and Moms

On this Delta Moon tour I brought two 1950s Harmony Stratotone H44 guitars. I call them Mac and Jack. Mac, tuned to D, is a proven veteran. Jack, tuned to G, is a few years older but new to the road. From the looks of him, he hasn't had a life of ease, but getting slung around for five shows a week now has got him showing his age. I thought Jack was in pretty good shape when we left. But three shows into the tour the bridge saddle disintegrated. I mean…See More

*   Breakfast. *   Travel. *   Load in.*   Sound check.*   Dinner.*   Show.*   Load out.*   Hang a little.*   Sleep.*   Repeat.Doesn't sound like much of a life, does it? But I love it.I've been on the road for much of my life. In the 1990s, after my son was born, I stayed home and pushed the stroller for a few years. Once he hit the third grade I started venturing out with Delta Moon. Now he's about to graduate high school. I'd like to take him along on…See More

Sprechen Sie Rock und Roll?

Once in a gas station store in south Georgia a young French couple stood ahead of us in the checkout line. As they left, the cashier set one fist on the counter and stared after them.“If I was going to visit some other country,” she said, “I think I’d at least learn the language first.”Well, I disagree. Why limit yourself? Just go.Life’s too short to learn everything. This Delta Moon tour is mostly in German, but by the time we’re done we’ll have heard some Czech, Danish, French and I don’t…See More

What the Road Has Taught Me

Delta Moon is five shows deep into this spring’s European tour, and I’m settling into my road head. We started near Dusseldorf, made our way southeast across Bavaria to Salzburg, Austria, birthplace of Mozart, and then east to Vienna, birthplace of Strauss, Haydn and the hot dog. Today I’m writing this in the back seat of a Mercedes van as we head north through the Czech Republic, past Prague, toward Dresden and Berlin. The shows have…See More

"Based on what you wrote, I'm considering taking a hammer to my 65 Hagstrom II and roughing it up a little. I'm ashamed it only has a broken whiskey stick and a couple of dings. Great song and pics by the way."

Not Stradivarius -- Stratotone

My late friend Mark Richardson once told me he had no interest in vintage instruments in mint condition. “Once a guitar’s that old,” he said, “if it had sounded good, somebody would have played it. An old instrument without a mark on it is usually one that’s no fun to play.”I bought a new guitar on eBay last week – new to me anyway; it may be older than I am. By the looks of it, this one should be a lot of fun to play. There’s no doubt it’s had an interesting life. That’s the way I like…See More
