Johnny Cash and the Power of Self & Myth

Johnny Cash is known as "Our Founder" at Dirty Roots Radio.  I give him that distinction because he was probably the gateway that led to what has become my musical taste today.  It's an honor intended to recognize his fearlessness in his music, in championing causes he believed in, and in living boldly according to his own internal compass.  Here are some thoughts I threw down on February 26th - what would have been his 81st…See More

CD Review - Kris Kristofferson "Feeling Mortal"

Much has been made about the somber content of Kris Kristofferon’s latest album – out today on his own KK Records label.  The thing IS called “Feeling Mortal”, after all.  Right out of the gate he indicates, a cappella for the first line of the album, that death is on his mind.  He’s “wide awake and feelin’ mortal”.  Yes, Kristofferson will turn 77 in June. Yes, he knows he will, as he sings in that album-opening title track, “soon descend like the sun into the…

CD Review - Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite "Get Up!"

Freakin’ January.  It’s all cold and desolate.  Everyone’s tapped out so there’s nothing happening anywhere.  Businesses are cutting back.  People stay in.

Freakin’ January.  A creative wasteland.  (Or would that be a wasteland of…
