Lydia Loveless - Somewhere Else (Album Review)

I’ve heard a lot of really unique descriptions of Lydia Loveless's new album, "Somewhere Else".  It’s always X + Y that supposedly equals a new sound.  None of them seem to capture the essence of the record for me.  On Loveless’s Facebook page, her sound is described as “Loretta Lynn and Patti Smith slamming shots at a Midwestern dive bar while cowboys and punks brawl out back”.  That’s a good one, but for my ears, even that falls flat.  If you want a good comparison, you have to look to The…See More

2014: A Surprising Year for Musical Discovery

I can remember periods of my life that, when I look back, are marked by the discovery of new music. After I lost my "dream job" in St. Louis and returned home to this small, rural town, I was disillusioned and frustrated, so I split as often as I could to go to the nearest city and spend time in music and bookstores, soaking up these "new" sounds (what was then called "alternative country").  I learned about classic albums by Cash, Kristofferson, Nelson, Jennings, and many others.  I’d spend…See More

Out Among the Stars: Q & A with John Carter Cash

On his website, John Carter Cash, the only child of Johnny and June Carter Cash, lists his occupation as “preserves the family legacy and is a caretaker to the heritage of his musical ancestors.” I was honored to speak with John Carter Cash recently, leading up to the release of the “new” Johnny Cash album, “Out Among the Stars”, in stores Tuesday, March 25th. DIRTY ROOTS:  You're certainly carrying the weight of some heavy names and we’re honored to have you represent them here on Dirty…See More

"Paul, your comment feeds my soul, man.  Thank you.  Much appreciated.  Bob was a huge personality and a huge influence.  My only hope was to do him justice.  Terrible way to go, indeed.  Just so unfair.  "

Remembering Bob Reuter, St. Louis Renaissance Man

Every time I sit down to write one of these kinds of things I worry that I sound pretentious because so many other people knew the departed so much better than me.  I wasn’t close to Bob Reuter, I wasn’t an expert on his life, and this isn’t intended to be an official tribute of any kind.I guess I’m mostly writing this for me. But I’ll share it because if even one reader gets turned on to Bob Reuter’s music, photography, or writing because of this, then I feel like I’ve done him some kind of…See More
