Hey Rick- I don't think we've met but yeah I'm pretty sure we've shared the same bar room/music hall at some point.  I've read your stuff over the years-nice work-all of it. Maybe we can meet up at show? Hal

Great disc and a great interview Rick.  I wonder how long the Great Unknowns will remain unknown?

Saving Up All Those Regrets: Interview with Becky Warren of the Great Unknowns

Seemingly unrelated anecdote: A boy on my daughter’s 5- and 6-year-old soccer team last spring fancied himself quite the ladies man and smooth operator. A girl named Bryanna, one of at least three female teammates that this young Romeo considered to be his girlfriend, missed a couple practices and games in a row. When she finally returned to the fold, he glided up to her and asked, smoothness in full bloom, “Hey, Bry. Where you been, girl?” Needless to say, “Hey, abbreviated-name-here. Where…See More

2011 Soundshot (or Maybe Snaptrack)

It’s a fun tradition, and one that I’m sure I share with a number of folks in this community. At the conclusion of every year, I put together three or four CDs that contain my favorite songs from that year. The results are part snapshot and part soundtrack (trademarks pending on the terms “snaptrack” and “soundshot”). It’s always entertaining and enlightening to revisit the year-end CDs five or ten years down the road, not to mention revisiting year-end cassettes from fifteen or twenty years…See More

Ain’t Nobody Home Out on the Floor

Two losses in the music world within the last week hit especially hard. The music of Howard Tate, who died last Friday at the age of 72, entered my world about a dozen years ago. And it did so in the same way that a lot of the work of veteran soul artists has found its way to me: via another singer. In the middle of a show at Chapel Hill’s lovingly frayed Local 506, Kelly Hogan knocked me over (for, oh, the third or fourth time that evening) with a sly, syncopated soul number. A little research…See More

Thanks alot, Rick. Because I'm so lousy at self promotion, if you think of anyone at ND that might be willing to review the record (including you!), let me know, ok? CD is in the mail! Have a great holiday, brother, Kev

Hi, Kevin. Thanks for checking in. I definitely remember writing that review (and definitely remember the record too, of course). I'm not writing nearly as much these days -- an occasional post here, mainly -- but I do have a roots-leaning…

Making Gravy: In Praise of Paul Kelly’s Signature Song

First, by way of introduction to Australian songwriter and singer Paul Kelly for those in need of one, are the words of Jimmy Guterman from Guterman’s book The Best Rock and Roll Records of All Time (Kelly’s 1985 release Post was number 97 on Guterman’s top 100 list): “Kelly sometimes seems like a rock-critic-invented mixture of Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, Graham Parker, Bruce Springsteen, and a half-dozen other significant white male rockers.” Not half-bad…

The V-Roys: A Collection and Some Recollections

Yes, the suits were a factor. There were those who turned out for the semi-novelty of it all and to check out the sharp-dressed men. Even the floor plan was well thought out. The band’s two vocalizing songwriters, Scott Miller and Mic (Mike, in the early days when vowels were flourishing) Harrison, were positioned stage right and left respectively, flanking bassist/young-Andy-Garcia lookalike Paxton Sellers. It was a straight line of navy blue, with bedrock drummer Jeff Bills behind and…

Great to hear from you, and thanks for the spin. I've been laying somewhat low musically, for a while, but it's gonna change soon...have two records I'm putting out. A solo EP (that has a band on it) and a live record with my new band, The Silver Threads.

I had a kid and am now holding down a decent day job and living in Rochester, NY, so things move slower than they used to. Still, I'm really hoping to reemerge, promote my record as much as I can, play locally and regionally with my band, etc over the next year.

How are you doing?

It totally made my day (maybe month!) to hear that you've liked what you heard so far of the record. Hope you'll like the rest just as much. Can't wait to hear!

Hey Rick!

We'd be so psyched to play your radio show some time! I think we're going to try to get down to the Triangle this fall or winter. I'll try to schedule something near the beginning of a week and let you know.

Hi Rick- Thanks for posting your top 20 list! A couple of those I'm not familiar with and need to check out. I liked the car trip benchmark. That's how I approached my list as well, but didn't put it into words perfectly like you did.

Hope you're doing well. I sure miss reading your great articles from the old print days.

Maybe we shot a game of pool together somewhere in the triangle? Or talked over a beer , or two. That was a great decade to be there. Backsliders, Two Dollar Pistols getting started, Whiskeytown, Tift Merrit, Stamey and Holsapple in various guises. Cat's cradle moved a couple of times while I was there. It's still down the hill in Carrboro, right? Berkeley, the Brewery, local 506. Saw a lot of good shows. You never know. Whereabouts in hillsborough do you live. I used to be on Orange grove road.

Hi Rick, Thanks for digging for Ann Wicker's contact. I want to tell her how much I am enjoying her book. You mentioned 60s & 70s soul. In early to mid 60s Durham had a club, Stallion Club, south of town. Big barn. Held 1500 folks. Most nights 1496 black folks and four white folks. I taught at NCC, and my students looked after me. Over a period of two or three years I saw everyone in soul & r&b there. One night after Wilson Pickett or someone similar performed, they kicked us out at midnight and let us pay our way back in at 1 am for Otis Redding.

Hey Rick,

I was econ prof at UNC-CH for many years, moved to UGA (weaker students, similar music scene, replace hoops with football), retired in 2006. Met Aussie chick in 1996 & moved down under in 2006. I am honorary prof here, but my real avocation is music. Always listened to it (Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny, Chuck in high school, soul & beach music in college, jazz since college, alt & roots more recently), and now I have time to immerse myself in it. I do a Sunday jazz show on community radio here, and on my really lucky Sundays I also sit in for the guys who do an alt & roots show. You should have a listen. We are streaming. dial up www.4zzzfm.org.au and follow instructions. My jazz show is 8-11 am Sunday, probably 6-9 pm Saturday your time. Thunderstorms & Neon Signs is 2-4 pm Sunday, probably midnight Saturday - 2 am Sunday your time. Both shows post playlists, which you can find on the web site.

And what may I ask excites you in Hillsborough?

Finally, Justin Townes Earle has fallen love with Queensland. He has appeared in Brisbane twice recently, with two more gigs on tap. He gives a wonderful, engaging, entertaining, solo performance.

Cheers, Knox

Rick,

I lived just down 86 in CH for 25 years without knowing you or of you. Now that I live in Australia and shop at the big A I know who you are and I usually follow your advice.

Can you put me in touch with the Wicker woman who edited the marvelous book on Carolinas music to which you contributed?

Cheers, Knox
