Ever notice how a song you never really pay attention to can sneak up on you if you are in a certain place or mood?  I think it’s just a matter of paying attention.  Songs are just a distraction or backdrop for so many people, but for most musicians and some listeners songs are like protein and carbohydrates.  You can’t live without them for very long.Last night we stopped by for some tacos and shrimp before a concert and were approached by Los Nuevos Jilgueros Del Norte (The New Northern…See More

Reno Sepulveda replied to Gillian Turnbull's discussion 'Alt-country vs. mainstream country'
The main difference between Americana and mainstream country is the audience.  Mainstream Country is still a made for radio product whereas "this thing of ours" is more computer driven.

Don't get worked up about the R&RHOF Reno.  I don't know what has less legitimacy - the Grammys or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Glitter and Doom

This week in Rock and Roll: Tom Waits inducted into R&R Hall of Fame – Captain Beefheart dies. Some cosmic FM band kizmet going on there perhaps? I don’t know. I don’t know shit.

But then I noted the J. Giels Band was passed over.   I was listening to Dave Marsh awhile back on the…

Howdy back at you and the missus. Speaking of waffles and fried chicken - did you ever make it to Roscoe's in LA (they also had a short-lived version in Oakland)? Best damn combo I ever had in a shady neighborhood.
Jean and I are hoping to make the Crepe CP show, time and driving willing. Life is throwing all kinds of curve balls and I've been swinging wildly. Missing the live music scene and Todd Roper's absence from the Mission Express. Hope to see you but if not, peace and happy trails be with you both.

hey Brian, thanks for your message... cool about Trout's - must have some music history there i bet. Fortunately, i've had enough firewood this winter and have burned about 8 cords or so so far... these next few days are supposed to be warmer than it has been for several months... up in the high 20s / low 30s. Another log or two on the fire keeps the edge off.

Stay in touch, my friend. Good to connect here.

hey Brian, thanks for the hookup here! Good to hear from you... i really like that Trout's bar pic! Where is that? Strange, not many (or any!) comments from Craig on the new board... hmmm... anyway, hope things are going well. 3 feet of snow on the ground before the last round, which dumped another roughly 18". Spent the last two days digging out. russ

I can't speak for anyone else, but there are several albums I value tremendously, which I only own digitally. Even though I almost never take them off their shelves, the CDs I value do remain on shelves because I'm afraid of a hard drive crash that would make me lose them. But then it's my job to value music. I'd be more curious about the value of MP3s to average people who are simply casual listeners. I would guess that music is intrinsically valuable, regardless of its mode of delivery. I also think information and criticism, whatever that is now, retains value. I wish I could say people see monetary value in it, because that's my living, but I think it's going to be free as we move forward and those of us in this business will have to make our living some other way (ads or writing books, or something else).
