CD Review: Bahamas - Barchords

Having just read the No Depression interview with Afie Jurvanen, I thought I'd share the review that I had recently done on his new album. Jurvanen, who goes by the moniker Bahamas, creates music that radiates a laidback coolness. The Toronto-based musician (who spent several years playing in Feist’s band) blends together blue-eyed soul, home-crafted indie rock, and ‘60s rock - and then gives it all a dose of echo to create something always interesting and often captivating. His new…See More

I saw a show on the same tour a week or so before. The night was full of excellent guitar and his new pedal steel player is great too.

Vince Gill’s Troubadour Return

Vince Gill’s return to the legendary Los Angeles club, the Troubadour, might not be as celebrated as James Taylor and Carole King’s reunion show back in 2007, which spawned a DVD and subsequent tour. However, it did make for a memorable evening. Walking out on stage with his 8-piece band, Gill - dressed in a plaid shirt, jeans, short hair and black-rimmed glasses - looked more like the guy next store rather than a Nashville superstar. Stating that it had been 35 years since he last played the…See More

For a pop songwriter, I had no problem with the guy.  Actually (having a sentimental streak) liked a lot of it, for the type of "mood" music it was.  "Endless Love" with Diana Ross was, say what you will, technically…

Jim Case commented on Michael Berick's blog post 'Lionel Richie Goes Country'
As soon as I saw this I thought "I doubt if it'll really be country".  Then I saw who his singing "pardners" would be & my suspicions were confirmed. As Dale Watson would say, "That's country, my…

Lionel Richie Goes Country

Lionel Richie, the man who gave us such pop standards as “Say You, Say Me” and “Three Times A Lady,” is readying his country debut. Next March, Mercury Nashville will release Tuskegee, Richie’s country duets album. His singing “pardners” will include Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Jennifer Nettles, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker, Rascal Flatts, Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, Billy Currington, Little Big Town, and Jason Aldean. However, before the disc’s release next year,…See More

George Harrison learned much about music from the Everly Bros,. Carl Perkins, Scotty Moore w/Elvis, Buddy Holly and any number of artists who would have had a place being dicussed here. He and his compadres took the vocab of American music they…

If for nothing else, The Beatles said Buck Owens was cool and covered "Act Naturally."  That's Americana enough for me.

To quote the late, great Townes Van Zandt “There aren’t but two kinds of music: There’s the blues ... and there’s zip-a-dee-doo-dah.”  I think George Harrison has a place in the mix.

Benjamin Lukoff commented on Michael Berick's blog post 'Living in the George Harrison Material World: A Visit To The Grammy Museum'
The Beatles influenced many of the bands that No Depression traditionally covers. It would be hard to find a band--in any genre--that the Beatles *didn't* influence in one way or another. I think this is relevant. Or, one could just say…

Interesting news, but with all due respect George and his fellow Beatles were British pop rock stars. I do not see the connection  to the  "Americana, alt-country and roots music community".

Living in the George Harrison Material World: A Visit To The Grammy Museum

There has been quite the resurgence of interest in George Harrison of late. All of which is understandable (it’s the 10th anniversary of his death) and deserved (he was always seemed overshadowed by Lennon and McCartney). Harrison has been on the cover of several rock magazines, including Rolling Stone. HBO recently premiered the big Martin Scorsese-directed documentary, Living In The Material World and his widow Olivia Harrison has put together a coffee table… Continue

Live Review: Band of Heathens at the The Mint (Los Angeles), April 13, 2011

At some point, you’ve probably heard someone say about a band, “you’ve got to see them live.” The Band of Heathens is one of those bands. The Austin-based outfit has put out three fine albums over the last few years and have garnered a pair of Americana Music Association award nominations. But  - “you’ve got to see them live.” On stage, you get to fully appreciate their group’s three frontmen (Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist) in action and how well the band (which also includes…

Hi Michael

As a featured contributor to No Depression, I’m particularly keen on getting your feedback for the following – Please forgive the intrusion if you don’t have the time or inclination to reply.

I’ve posted the following to the No Depression discussion board – you can either respond there or alternatively drop me a line at shatchsurvey1@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks very much for your time

Kind regards,

Steve

My name is Steve Hatch and I’m currently conducting research for my Master’s in Songwriting at Bath Spa University in Bath, England (though I happen to be an ex-pat Georgia boy).  I would be extremely grateful if you could find the time to listen to the track (link below) and answer the 2 accompanying questions.  The more detail, the better of course (more to say in my final analysis) – but all feedback will be useful and very much appreciated.

Sadly, as this is an academic pursuit, there is a deadline.  Please reply by May 20th if at all possible so that I can have time to chew over your response and include it in my final write-up.

            The track: http://soundcloud.com/stevehatch

1)     Which artist/band(s) would you say the track is most similar to and why?

2)     Which genre(s) would you say the track belongs to and why?
