A dark and lovely slice of Americana that embraces tradition while it moves the genre in new and interesting directions

Albuquerque, New Mexico based band Trilobite - a.k.a. Singer, songwriter, Mark Ray Lewis fancies himself a “fictionist”, but has the literary cred to back it up. He was a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford and won the O. Henry and Pushcart awards for his short fiction piece Scordatura — which featured an introductory note by Dave Eggers, and was nominated by Joyce Carol Oates. Not too shabby. Trilobite band and this new album “Silver Skin” is a bastard highbred that surprises, like all great fiction never obvious or straight forward, but the stories draw you in and keep you there…Also with a new publish novel “Long Sad River” on the book stands for Mark Ray Lewis the Story continues with a UK tour planned for May…read on.

Songwriter Mark Ray Lewis grew up on Highway 61, across from the Huck Finn Shopping Center, in Hannibal, MO. His father was a Southern Baptist preacher who could pick out melodies on the piano by ear, and his mom possessed a singing voice that was powerful enough to scare glass.

She often performed in church and in 1978, she made an album and 8-track recording. In his 20's, Mark was working as a landscaper in New Mexico and writing fiction in his spare time when he was offered a Wallace Stegner Fellowship by Stanford University. In 2003, his writing was awarded a Pushcart Prize, following a nomination from Joyce Carol Oates. Returning to New Mexico, Mark stumbled into a friendly community of musicians and Trilobite was formed. A self-titled record was released in 2006 to warm reviews. Regularly airings on BBC Radio 2 by Bob Harris resulted in Bob recieving a message from Morcheeba's Ross Godfrey saying when Trilobite came on his car radio, he was so struck by the songs beauty he had to pull over to listen properly. Bob then put Ross in touch with Mark and since then Mark has opened for Morcheeba in the States and Ross has join him on stage several times.

All the recordings on this new disc were done at home, in downtown Albuquerque, using a weighty collection of instruments that includes a sharply-pitched pump organ that Mark's grandfather bought in the 1930's for 50 cents and a thriftstore piano of a similar vintage. Silver Skin is full of happy accidents and errant noises. The foundation tracks of vocal and rhythm guitar are always recorded simultaneously, "live to tape." It is mixed and mastered with a light hand. Honesty and wildness are selected over virtuosity. Mechanized click tracks are avoided in favor of human rhythm.
