Can Anybody Recommend...?

Woody's masterwork is the album called Dust Bowl Ballads, recorded in 1940. It's got his best playing and singing, and some of his greatest songs, uncluttered by other musicians. It's the only real c…

Yes, you need a permit to play 3rd Street Promenade. You get it at City Hall. Costs $37.00, and you need two passport photos. They'll give you 25 pages of rules to memorize. I don't know if they started a lottery for 3rd Street yet - they didn't use…

Do you know anything about busking on the 3rd st. promenade? My 10 year old sone wants me to accompany him and I should really indulge this desire of his. Do you need a permit? I don't have much time to research this so if you know that would be re…

Busking Santa Monica Pier is getting more complicated, and the musicians are getting stressed.... I'm just an occasional busker. I think of it as a great adventure, and a great way to share my art with people and sharpen up my skills. But there are…

Upper Big branch Mine Disaster I'm still writing protest songs. But it's trickier than it was a couple years ago - you don't want to come off like a teabagger and lose your credibility.... It was a lot easier to be a rabblerouser when the neo-cons…

Yeah, I was turned on to Buckner by ND Magazine, as well as Son Volt, Alejandro, Freekwater, Jesse Sykes and many others. I think I started reading in '98 or '99, when I lived in Bakersfield and was saving up for my Martin. Bought quite a few albums…

For every road, there is a story...

www.losthillsmusic.com

I'm a gigging songwriter based in the the Southern Sierra, Southern San Joaquin region of California. My songs are rooted in traditional American folk music and inspired by my real life travels and experiences. I also love to play the dust bowl ballads of Woody Guthrie and the depression era songs of the Carter Family. I play at Coffee Houses, Cafes, small town fairs and art shows, any place they're serving beer and wherever my truck breaks down. I've got a big bag of protest songs, too, and I'm always ready to play for peace rallies and environmental organizations. Music can change the world, my friends, and it changes it every day...

Ramsay Midwood and Randy Weeks, Live at the Cinema Bar in Los Angeles

November 6th and 7th, 2009

Is the Cinema Bar the coolest live music venue in Los Angeles? Erin and I like it a lot, and we always like to see who's playing there whenever I make it down to LA. It's a funky old dive in Culver City that boo… Continue

"Making a living, not a killing..."

Utah Phillips talks to Democracy Now's Amy Goodman about his career in folk music. Utah was one of our greatest songwriters and storytellers and a great teacher. I met Utah a couple of times at a little folk club in Leucadia, California where I used to hang out back in the mid eighties, and attended a couple of… Continue

Woody Guthrie, America's greatest ballad writer

In May of 1956, New Jersey cops busted a wiry little man for vagrancy. He was headed West out of New York City, on a Greyhound, and he didn’t have any money for the fare. He told the cops he was sick, and not drunk, and requested to be taken to a hospital. The psychiatrist who examined him thought he was… Continue
