Willie along with Steve Forbert have got to be the most underrated songwriters and performers in America.

Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen.  Though some may consider it dated, it hearkens back to a time people remember fondly - Leon's collaboration with Joe Cocker and the advent of stadium rock.  Okies and limeys indeed.

Willie Nelson: An Epic Life

An epic life and an epic book as well. Written by Joe Nick Patoski, this is not a Willie Nelson for Dummies. No, at 567 pages it is more of a textbook on all things Willie. The diehard fan (Willieologist) will love this book. A seroius tome written by a serious writer. A former editor at Texas Monthly, his Texas connections serve him well as he has written about Nelson for 35 years. From reading the book, some of the things we learn are: (1.) Nelson's gypsy lifestyle was probably influenced to…See More

I remember back in my teens going to see the T.A.M.I. show film when it first came out. I was going ostensibly to see the Rolling Stones and other British Invasion bands but the Star of the Moment was James Brown and his Famous Flames ... I had…

The Hardest Working Man (How James Brown Saved The Soul Of America)

An audacious title about an audacious man and a tumultuous time by Boston writer James Sullivan. In fact the title was so compelling, I felt the need to read it almost immediately. But it only took a few pages for me to get bogged down in the minutiae that was 1968 Boston race relations and politics. The book attempts to focus on Brown's Boston Garden concert the day after Dr. Martin Luther Ling was murdered. Along the way we're treated to a meandering bio of the godfather of soul. Nothing…See More

I realize the whole Ray Stevens thing was a big joke on youtube, but what if....? Stevens does have a serious side that hasn't been exhibited since...well its been a long time. But if Rubin can work with Neil Diamond (and I do like Diamond, but…

"If I were to trace the genealogy of the country music Outlaw, it would start with Bobby Bare, roll through Willie & Waylon and that whole gang, follow Cash through the late 90′s, and end up in the country music underground with people like Peewee Moore as possibly the perfect example of the Outlaw lineage in the present day"
