Larry Keel and Natural Bridge joined us for the first annual Poor Farm Fest on September 23, 2011. We were awstruck with his natural and easy-going manner as he turned our first festival into a huge hit!  As he sang, I noticed his lovely wife…

Little John the Conqueror: An Interview with The Reverend John DeLore

Back in August, with Hurricane Irene bearing down on NYC and New England, Brooklyn singer/songwriter The Reverend John DeLore tweaked the lyrics to the old Leadbelly classic, "Goodnight Irene," giving it a timely Gotham City theme, a musical plea to spare the island metropolis. DeLore recorded a solo acoustic version around 3pm on August 28, emailed it to a number of his musician friends across the city's five…See More

Album Review: Alexis Marceaux - "Orange Moon"

The follow-up to her 2009 debut, Dandelion, finds young NOLA native Alexis Marceaux maturing into a songwriting force to be reckoned with. The opening track of Orange Moon is a dramatic, emotionally charged homage to her late friend Leila Foret (to whom the album is also dedicated) that puts Marceaux's powerful and gorgeous alto front and…See More

It's extremely difficult to write as simply and as deeply felt as Prine does. The man is a national treasure. Nice piece, Terry.

Album Review: Colin Hay - "Gathering Mercury" - (Compass)

By Jim Simpson Forever known as the lead singer-songwriter of the iconic '80s band Men At Work, Colin Hay has been cranking out solo records for nearly a quarter century. Gathering Mercury is arguably his best work. Tragically, though, the album was inspired and written after the death of Hay's father. "Dear Father" features one of the most poignant and heart-wrenching lyrics on the album: "Dear father I never got to say goodbye/I was…See More

Album Review: Over the Rhine - "The Long Surrender" (Great Speckled Dog)

By Jim Simpson

Karin Bergquist (half of the husband/wife duo at the core of Over the Rhine since 1991) could sing a grocery list and make it compelling, so just imagine her smoldering vocals and unique phrasing on such lines as "I sing the bebop apocalypse/Lean into you, God's hands on my hips/Grip the midnight microphone/Steel every cell of my flesh and bone/I…

Hi Jim!

As a featured contributor to No Depression, I’m particularly keen on getting your feedback for the following – Please forgive the intrusion if you don’t have the time or inclination to reply.

I’ve posted the following to the No Depression discussion board – you can either respond there or alternatively drop me a line at shatchsurvey1@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks very much for your time

Kind regards,

Steve

My name is Steve Hatch and I’m currently conducting research for my Master’s in Songwriting at Bath Spa University in Bath, England (though I happen to be an ex-pat Georgia boy - from your neck of the woods in fact!  I grew up in Lilburn).  I would be extremely grateful if you could find the time to listen to the track (link below) and answer the 2 accompanying questions.  The more detail, the better of course (more to say in my final analysis) – but all feedback will be useful and very much appreciated.

Sadly, as this is an academic pursuit, there is a deadline.  Please reply by May 20th if at all possible so that I can have time to chew over your response and include it in my final write-up.

1)     Which artist/band(s) would you say the track is most similar to and why?

2)     Which genre(s) would you say the track belongs to and why?
