The LMOM replied to Jim Pipkin's discussion 'What is your favorite Arizona music festival? Least favorite? Why?' in the group ND Arizona
Are there any festivals a little closer to Phoenix?   Seems like the event that Fiddler's Dream puts on are really the only ones.   Who would I talk to if I were interested in playing at either Boyce Thompson or the Sharlot Hall…

I think it was Garrison Keillor who said that the future of publishing was ten million authors with ten readers each, all blood relations. I would rather place a decent value on my music, because if I don't value it, who will? Sure I'll…

Jim Pipkin replied to Terry Foldenauer's discussion '5 Most Overrated Bands or Singers'
Agree with your whole list...easy to slam the over-the-top Pops, but much better to go out and find all the truly great talent that is too edgy, smart, or proud to fit onto a major label leash.

Great post. I'm ten years behind you on the ladder, but damn I can relate, especially on days when my trick knee is giving me fits! So MUCH music out there, and life intrudes. I would suggest you listen to Mat DeRiso's "Plank Road…

Long Lives, Addictions, and the Impermanence of Fame

Here's an old brag sheet from October of 1965 - KTKT Color Channel 99, Tucson Arizona. Take a look at the smiling face third from the bottom. That would be Joe Bailey, successful DJ 6-9pm, soon to move up to morning DJ status, top-40 spins, millions in earnings and the wild party that involved almost everyone involved in popular music at top-rated stations in the late 1960s. He had it all, plus something extra.

Even then, Joe admits, he… Continue

Party On The Mountain - First Annual Gold King Mine Americana Festival

Talk about a festival with a view!

Photos courtesy Brian McCormick. Great road trip Brian!

First festivals are always a good thing. First Americana festivals are dear to my heart, because without folks willing to take the time, trouble, and expense to organize them this music would be a far less vital force in the world. With no radio support to speak of, almost no mainstream press, and on a shoestring budget, the… Continue

James Hyland and the Joint Chiefs release Celestial Navigation

First a disclaimer. My cousin Willie Pipkin is involved with this project, in between fishing trips. But since I've provided a link for you to listen to this entire album for yourselves, you tell me if this is just family pride talkin'.

With all of the frenetic, fast-paced Rockabilly being ranted and raved about in Americana circles, I must take a moment to recgonize a fine, mellow new CD from Austin's… Continue

No Polite Way to Deal with a Gasbag

So I'm sitting with a buddy at a folk festival, being interviewed by local radio. We're twenty minutes into the thing, and a gasbag walks up. We point politely to the mic, let him know what we're doing...and the gasbag starts talking. He won't shut up! Just stands there blowing air, wasting all of our time.

At first I was incredulous - thinking this stuffed shirt has got to "get it" soon and wander off.

But no.

More hot air.

The radio host casts me a… Continue
