Johnny Cash and the Many Versions of "God's Gonna Cut You Down"

Johnny Cash recorded the traditional folk song "God's Gonna Cut You Down" during his final years while working with Rick Rubin at American Recordings. The song appeared on American V: A Hundred Highways (2006), which came out after Cash's death.  In the song, the narrator warns that one cannot escape God:  "Go tell that long tongue liar / Go and tell that midnight rider / Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter…

Before Springsteen, Emmylou Harris Released a Great "Wrecking Ball"

In the last few weeks, many have focused on Bruce Springsteen's new album, Wrecking Ball. Tepper is an actor who does a one-man show portraying Woody Guthrie.  He appears in the short film Been Good To Know Yuh – a Woody Guthrie Story.  Check out his performance of Guthrie's song:

 Guthrie originally called the…

Although we often associate the word "pilgrim" with the English colonists who sailed on the Mayflower ship, settled in Plymouth, and dined on the first Thanksgiving meal, the word in its broader meaning applies to any traveler or more specifically, "one who embarks on…

JeffK commented on Bill Kopp's blog post 'Dave Van Ronk — Inside Dave Van Ronk (Album Review)'
"Thanks for the post.  Although I had some familiarity with Van Ronk's music, "Inside Llewyn Davis" led me to go deeper and to read Van Ronk's wonderful memoir, "Mayor of MacDougal Street."  In the book, he…"

JeffK replied to Bruce Brantley's discussion 'Are the roots of alt country represented by Uncle Tupelo, Gram Parsons or Elvis Presley? Nominate somebody else.'
"Interesting discussion you started Bruce.  Thanks.  For me, the question partly depends on the purpose of the definition.  If I think of "No Depression" (magazine and online community) or how I describe it to someone who has…"
