I believe in the integrity of the lyrics but what I hate even worse is when they"misuse" a song. When they leave out certain lyrics and try to take a different meaning than the songwriter had in mind. The best example I can think of is…

Great choices and two of them penned by the greatest songwriter of all, Mr. Prine........Okay Dylan fans jump on me but take an honest view of their body of work and the depth of their songs....

wrecking ball

A bold and innovative move for an artist who had previously been satisfied to sing wonderful backup and traditional type folk country songs. She is truly a great artist, and person. Her voice is true and sincere and with this release she stepped outside of the "comfort zone" and delivered a masterpiece on all levels.

Album of the Decade

I certainly have no problem with Gillian Welch being recognized for her effort in Time The Revelator. She has never gotten the credit she and David Rawlings so richly deserve. Her Unique style and sound is truly mesmerizing. However my only thought is that it is only her third best effort. Just a humble opinion but to me her first, "Revival" has never been matched by anything she has done. Maybe it was because it was her first, maybe because i was so "shocked" by its bare beauty and sound.… Continue

Top Eleven Follow Up

Well, I slept on it and of course it occured to me that I may have been negligent in my rankings, thus forcing me to add two more to make a lucky thirteen. I also noted I had a couple of typos but I was rushing. I may have misspelled intelligent? [ What does that say for me] Anyway here is number 14] No Kinda Dancer and West Textures by Robert Earl Keen, the raw, unpolished Keen delivers some of his best songs and vocals in these two earliest works. Flawed, yet brilliant, the song "Maria" is so… Continue

Top Eleven

Everybody and their bald-headed midget cousin does a top ten , so here is my top eleven albums [how old is this guy?] This list is ever changing and includes more than just alt country, so here I go 1] John Prine, by John Prine, his first. What can you say a guy in his early twenties writes songs that are deep, clever, and with a wisdom far beyond any lyrics ever scribbled on a dusty notebook. 2] Revival by Gillian Welch, [ see my blog] 3] Blackjack David by Dave Alvin, [ again, see my blog] 4]… Continue

'kept up, perhaps' - and - 'version of Orphan Girl'

Hey Kim, how about a chance to edit before the post goes up? Some kind of 'take back' or 'do-over'?

While their recorded output hasn't keep up, pehaps, (and 'they' are actually a duo) Welch and Rawlins have been keeping that quality up on the festival circuit.
And you could say that they've become the fore runners of what Peter Blackstock has called the New Tradtional String Band movement, (see No Depression #76).
To hear what Gillian and David have inspired, listen to Crooked Still's version Orphan Girl.
Cheers, Ciskoe
