I managed to catch Phil Ochs in concert in a relatively small coffee house (same place I caught Lightfoot, Tim Hardin and others in the 60s) ... he was touring Pleasures of the Harbor ... solo ... just Phil and a guitar ... he managed to pull off th…

"If there's any hope for America, it lies in a revolution, and if there's any hope for a revolution in America, it lies in getting Elvis Presley to become Che Guevara."- Phil Ochs

Return of the Grievous Angel ... overheard from a window while at a BBQ in Edmonton in 1978 ... although I'd heard Sweetheart of the Rodeo when it first came out (thanks to a prophetic instructor) and I'd heard the Flying Burritos a time or two on A…

No new "Ballad of Lucy Jordan"? Well ... Marianne Faithfull's version is about as definitive as these things get.

Room of One's Own by Sara Hickman from her 1994 release Necessary Angels. A very inspirational song dedicated to Sara's grandmother, Martha.

Jim Croce died on the same day that Gram Parsons's body was stolen and taken to the desert for cremation. Gram was perhaps younger but his fame came later....

Back in my last year of art college (1968/9) a very perceptive instructor brought in the new Byrds' album ... Sweetheart of the Rodeo ... but it didn't take ... I heard the Burritos a couple of time in the early days of AOR radio ... still didn't ta…

His first solo CD (he's also a member of X and the Knitters) is called Meet John Doe and has some fabulous guitar work by both Jon Dee Graham and Richard Lloyd throughout.

I was taken by the similarity at times between Ben Gibbard and Slaid Cleaves ... I'm not familiar with Gibbard's work with Death Cab for Cutie ... where I heard this similarity was on the Jack Kerouac project Gibbard did with Jay Farrar (One Fast Mo…

Just looking at this year ... 5-10 per month (a couple of months came in at 8) ... I have trouble keeping up with listening especially if I fall in love with one and put it on heavy rotation (as I did with Chely Wright's latest just yesterday) ... m…

I thought I was a Kelly Willis completist but I have to admit to missing her very first one completely. I guess I have some of it on her MCA best of but looks like it's time to unleash those bloodhounds.....

If you like REM, you might like The Byrds. If you liked Tom Petty, you might like Roger McGuinn. If you like early REM, you might like early 10 000 Maniacs.

The Wallflowers (and Jakob Dylan solo) ... I was listening to some CDs by them that I hadn't listened to in an age yesterday and this morning it was Bringing Down the Horse (that title always makes me smile). PS Spider & the Fly by the Stones is a…

Pretty much the whole Meet John Doe CD ... thanks in part to Doe's fabulous voice and the blistering guitar work of Richard Lloyd and Jon Dee Graham. Also the new Living Sisters release.

Close Encounters of the Bob Dylan Kind

Way back when I was first going to art college ... this would be the mid-60s in Toronto ... I used to take the subway to get down to the school ... one busy morning the Bloor station was crowded with humanity headed downwards when I spotted someone on the up escalator who looked very familiar. That pile of curly hair, those shades, the gaunt face ... it HAD to be Bob Dylan. Unbeknownst to me Dylan was playing Massey Hall that night. There was a picture of him in the paper the next day ... seemin… Continue

REM BLOG CONTEST

I can only speak for how the first two albums affected me personally ... I got interested in them after reading a review somewhere that likened Michael Stipe's mumbling singing to the sound of bees buzzing over a field or meadow ... I bought both Reckoning and Murmer and really got into deciphering what in blazes Stipe was singing about. My assistant (PBUH) mentioned having encountered a book as a child about several Chinese brothers who had to do amazing feats ... such as swallowi… Continue

The eagerly anticipated digital release of Kirsten DeHaan’s EP “Thorns On A Crown” is right around the corner. On Tuesday October 6, the new and highly acclaimed alternative rock singer and songwriter’s songs can be purchased at major online retailers such as iTunes, Amazon.com, Napster, and EMusic. Kirsten has developed quite a following in a relatively short period of time, because of the uniqueness of her voice and style, which has been compared to the sweetness of Liz Phair, a soft, airy quality like that of Sia, and the rich alto of Fiona Apple.

In the meantime, register and download her single "1984" for free at HYPERLINK "http://kdlocal.com" http://kdlocal.com

Being stuck in traffic with good music is never a drag. It's a chance to really listen to an album instead of have it as background. Glad Red House/Eliza Gilkyson was on for the ride.
