Saw the Scorchers a bunch back in college, late 80's edition. They played a couple different clubs in Columbia, SC, but the shows I remember most were when they played a spring concert show outdoors on one of the USC intramural fields...their openin…

1917 by Niamh Parsons on her Old Simplicity release. Not a particularly happy song about a French prostitute in WW One (I think Emmylou Harris has covered it as well).

Jon Dee Graham's latest (It's Not As Bad As It Looks) ... inspired writing and playing by the master plus able assistance from Fastball's drummer and Son Volt's bass player ... a couple of songs sound reminiscent of Alejandro Escovedo but that could…

Two songs I never tire of ... Return of the Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons and Windfall by Son Volt ... thematically related, I guess.

I love introducing it to others (who might have trouble encountering it here in Toronto where it mostly only gets exposure in relatively small clubs). Imagine back in the mid-90s when we heard Son Volt live for the very first time and the opening ac…

Tom Russell ... wrote the song "Joshua Tree" about Gram. Ryan Adams sometimes sounds a lot like Gram. Blue Rodeo ... there have been two bands called Grievous Angels (one Canadian, one American) There was a Canadian band called The Red Hot Burrit…

I've never heard of Gram being credited with any of the writing of Wild Horses ... I always understood that the Stones were going to have Sneaky Pete play steel on their version but they had label problems and the Burritos' version ended up coming o…

I have a very good idea why Gram never got played on country radio ... in Toronto at least ... I was listening to a local country station one day while driving somewhere and the DJ (one Dave Johnson) said he'd recently heard the best country record…

Seriously into I See Hawks Over L.A. ... just got their first two releases but what really got me interested was their Shoulda Been Gold best of which has a fabulous version of Bossier City with Carla Olson helping out on duet vocals. That plus the…

I like their song about the old apartment ... the idea of someone getting so PO'd while he's breaking into his ex-gf's apartment amuses me for some reason. Haven't heard their latest but it will be without Steven Page (who sang most of their early s…

Just this week word got out that Gordon Lightfoot had passed away ... that is until Gordie started phoning radio stations and newspapers denying it ... I saw an e-mail with RIP GORDON LIGHTFOOT in the afternoon and my mood started to plummet until s…

I was around for Mark Holland's GPMF (even designed some issues of the CAMN but no bumper stickers) ... while working on a book in the late 70s I encountered a lady who had seen the FBB (in NYC?) and had coffee with them afterwards (she worked in pr…

I was fortunate enough to see the Texas Tornados live (back in the early 90s, I'm guessing) ... they were totally awesome. Another band I saw live around that time who were also superb were Los Lobos. I still need to get more music by both bands. Ag…

Good Vibrations is pretty close to being a Pet Sounds outtake as I recall (or it was recorded immediately after PS).. It's also just Brian plus Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew. In Brian's autobiography (Wouldn't It Be Nice) he explains the difficulty o…

Close Encounters of the Bob Dylan Kind

Way back when I was first going to art college ... this would be the mid-60s in Toronto ... I used to take the subway to get down to the school ... one busy morning the Bloor station was crowded with humanity headed downwards when I spotted someone on the up escalator who looked very familiar. That pile of curly hair, those shades, the gaunt face ... it HAD to be Bob Dylan. Unbeknownst to me Dylan was playing Massey Hall that night. There was a picture of him in the paper the next day ... seemin… Continue

REM BLOG CONTEST

I can only speak for how the first two albums affected me personally ... I got interested in them after reading a review somewhere that likened Michael Stipe's mumbling singing to the sound of bees buzzing over a field or meadow ... I bought both Reckoning and Murmer and really got into deciphering what in blazes Stipe was singing about. My assistant (PBUH) mentioned having encountered a book as a child about several Chinese brothers who had to do amazing feats ... such as swallowi… Continue

The eagerly anticipated digital release of Kirsten DeHaan’s EP “Thorns On A Crown” is right around the corner. On Tuesday October 6, the new and highly acclaimed alternative rock singer and songwriter’s songs can be purchased at major online retailers such as iTunes, Amazon.com, Napster, and EMusic. Kirsten has developed quite a following in a relatively short period of time, because of the uniqueness of her voice and style, which has been compared to the sweetness of Liz Phair, a soft, airy quality like that of Sia, and the rich alto of Fiona Apple.

In the meantime, register and download her single "1984" for free at HYPERLINK "http://kdlocal.com" http://kdlocal.com

Being stuck in traffic with good music is never a drag. It's a chance to really listen to an album instead of have it as background. Glad Red House/Eliza Gilkyson was on for the ride.

Love Joy Lynn White, but it wasn't me on her board. While I have you, what are your two or three favorite JLW cd"s?

tried singing it in my head and couldn't get it either. I can remember the Glen Miller band's 'Pennsylvania 6-5000' , but that's cheating.

Hey I just happened to re-read your note. Why not bring over your five chatty friends from Robbie's board? ;-) We need to get some buzz going in the NoDepressionAltCountry group, no? I'm enjoying your posts.
