Colorado's Monocle Band Debut Album

I fell immediately in love with this Boulder, Colorado based Monocle Band last year sometime right before Couch By Couchwest and reached out to them to please join us with a submission which they promptly did with the song ‘Can’t Get By’(see below) so needless to say I’ve waited anxiously for their debut album.Released October 15th Monocle’s eleven…See More

CD Review - Morning River Band "To Suzie"

Morning River Band's latest release, To Suzie, described by Fields as “an ode to good riddance,” was inspired by encounters with George Jones and Jim Beam.I am sure a lot will be made of ‘A country band from Philly?’ but let’s get past all that, this is a drinkers band from Philly. While known for great songs of booze and blues, there is a glimpse of insight and depth of character on this album that show potential for a leap of…See More

Jeanette Lynne - Debut Album 'You've Got Me'

Jeanette Lynne's Bio states "She is an up and coming songwriter from West Chester, Pennsylvania" with her debut album 'You've Got Me' I think it's safe to say, She has arrived!  Among the many outstanding female vocalists out there these days she holds her own in both songwriting and vocal style. A very accomplished guitar player the album is filled with gorgeous melodies and harmonies with a dream like quality that is…See More

EP Review - Franky Silence & Ghost Orchestra "Fallen"

Franky Silence’s latest work is full of swearing, moaning, ranting and raving. The protagonists know that they’re lost, but they don’t care anymore – they just continue.Sabrina Troxler and Adi Rohner, a young artist couple, are Franky Silence. They have dedicated themselves to traditional American song writing, thus “Fallen” is characterized by gloomy references to blues, Folk Noir and Vaudeville chanson. Street Date:…See More

CD Review - Ten Foot Polecats "Undertow"

Jim Chilson (Guitar) Chad Rousseau (Drums) Jay Scheffler (Vocals & Harp)The new album from Boston's Ten Foot Polecats ‘Undertow’ is gonna drag you out to the woodshed and kick your ass,  a mixture of deep Mississippi mud, Chicago grit, Texas twang with flashes of San Fran psych layered as thick as the Boston molasses flood.'Undertow’ Kicks off like fast moving freight train barreling down the tracks, with its…See More

Mother Merey and the Black Dirt - Down to the River

I was but a wee lad back when Canned Heat came on the scene and freaked me out with their jug blues/boogie and I continue to go back to the orignal line up with Alan "Blind Owl" Christie Wilson, Bob "The Bear" Hite, Henry "Sunflower" Vestine releases for my fix of gritty rootsy, bluesy folk.Austin's Mother Merey and the Black Dirt just changed that, they've got the missing ingredient, vocalist Merey Kimbrough's uncomparable singing over…See More

CD Review - Thorn & Shout (Self-Titled)

Sofia was formerly known as Squinch Owl, who's 2010 Homeward Bound release is still estential listening, and Link Crowsfoot formerly of Thy Courage Quail are now Thorn & Shout. Combining Sofia's infectiously unique vocals and Link's enchanting Appalachian snake charmer voice integrated with great story telling and skillfully played abundance of intruments this is…See More

Jonathan Warren and The Billy Goats

Lugging the sound of Appalachian around like a travel worn tattered old suitcase plastered with travel stickers, containing the basic necessities a traveler needs to keep thier roots close, and ample space for things collected through weary wanderings, Jonathan Warren and The Billy Goats build on those roots of mountian music with a cross section of influences for a sound they rightly call “progressive…See More

Up Like the Clouds, Debut Album from Dubl Handi

Not since the vibrant Greenwich Village folk scene of the late 50's early ’60′s, has so much good folk music come from the city that never sleeps, these days Brooklyn is taking the lead in a Folk revival with a slew of folksters assembling around the legendary Jalopy Theatre. High atop and in the thick of it are Dubl Handi, Named after the Washboard company from the 1800's. Dubl…See More

Tumbleweed Wanderers - So Long

Tumbleweed Wanderers started out busking the streets of Oakland, with a soulful howl of distant winds, they picked up a steady stream of eager ears, leading to performances at small bars and cafes, to becoming a major local headliner, selling out shows at the Bay Area’s best venues such as Great American Music Hall and Bottom of the Hill and recording their debut full-length album 'So Long' in July of 2012. Combining soul,…See More

Tony Tedesco & Full Fathom 5 Debut LP

Sometimes you need to get a new dog if it don't bark when there's a ruckus in your backyard, how I missed this staple of the Asbury Park music scene until now has me scratching my head with my hind leg. With 30 years of guitar playing, Tony didn't start writing and singing songs until he was 40, when he started play with Gorgo "it was instantly magic" he says. Gravely, whiskey soaked and aged like gnarly tree bark, Gorgo and Tony sing and spin yarns like Hemingway and Hunter S. Thompson trading…See More

Annie Lou - Grandma's Rules For Drinkin'

Another great release from Hearth Music, Annie Lou- Grandma's Rules For Drinkin' is an ole' timey floor board tappin' excursion to Appalachia by way of the Yukon. Excellent fiddlin' and strummin' and Annie's time warp vocalizations combined with great storytelling bring the past and present together in this outstanding album.Grandma’s…See More

The Imperial Rooster - Cluckaphony

Yet again The Imperial Rooster burst forth with a floodwater of creativity on their new album “Cluckphony” In true Porch Pontificator style the Roosters with cathartic outbursts, and an orchestrated glorious ruckus, toss witty lines of insight and wisdom around like pit bulls with ragdolls as they create the soundtrack for the purgatory waiting room.
