When Jon Duncan says a record is the best Ukulele record ever...you just buy it. Then it turns into the biggest radio cop-out of all time, but my motive here is to get folks to hear the album in it's entirety, and then BUY it. This is the complete work of Papa Lemon Nash as it is available today. There are six songs on an out-of-print CD out there (I will find it)as well...and another three hours in the vaults at Arhoolie. We need to be for these because this is GOLD. Papa Lemon Nash was an entertainer who started his career in the 1920's. He played banjo, guitar, and most importantly for us here, the Ukulele. His venue was variable, from the back of cars to medicine show tents, street corners and red-light dance halls, and it is all here recollected in the recordings made between '56 and '61 by Richard Allen and Harry Oster. I apologize for bringing you a show with such a narrow scope, but I really want you to hear this. It is the best thing I have heard in a long time. Bowleg Rooster, Duckleg Hen Nobody Knows the Troubles I’ve Seen Grave Digger Blues • Spoken Excerpts titled “We Played Anywhere” Big Rock Candy Mountain • Spoken Excerpts titled “$25 Dollars a Night” Nobody Knows You When You are Down and Out • Spoken Excerpt titled “Barrelhouse” Trouble With The Man Stagolee Papa Lemon’s Blues • Spoken Excerpts titled “The Battlefield” Please Give Me Black and Brown • Spoken Excerpt titled “What Was a Medicine Show Like?” Bourbon Street Parade • Spoken Excerpt titled “Rabbit Brown” Let The Good Times Roll Brownskin Come and Go with Me • Spoken Excerpt titled “Spano’s and Fox” I’m Blue Every Monday Anybody Seen My Kitty? • Spoken Excerpt titled “Serenading with Frank Wagner” Way in the Hee Hi Hoo Those Drafting Blues • Spoken Excerpt titled “The Jiggler Vein and the Raincoat” What a Friend We Have In Jesus As always- Enjoy
