Daniel T commented on Kim Ruehl's blog post 'Merlefest 2011 gets going'
Merlefest is my favorite festival. It's not about the party. It's about the music. 4 days of it. From "front porch pickin' " to Lyle Lovett. Who gave a spectacular performance to close the night. A perfect…

I like silly little songs. Crowd-pleasers usually. Good review sir. Write more often. Thanks for turning me onto the band.

Sorry it took me so long to get around to checking this out Chris. The Mighty Orq is one fine player and singer. And yes I believe the Blues can be included in Americana. Originally American? That's a stretch for me.  Listen to Ali Farka…

Timing is everything! My Cowtown (Fort Worth , for those not from TX) living brother and family visited for Thanksgiving. His eldest wants to learn to play guitar so I spent some time showing her a few chords, and mentioned Willie as an inspiration.…

Have to agree with the first time being called "sir". Bit of a shock. But that was a looooong time ago. How about when I started making the groans my father makes when he gets out of bed in the morning. Or being able to pull a muscle just…

I don't just come to this site to discuss the bands I like, or just to get recommendations, for bands I may like. I also want to find out about which bands I probably won't like. Over the years, in print and on this site, negative reviews…

Larkin Poe, "Summer" an EP

This second installment in the ambitious "seasonal" series is another remarkable effort. Shorter than "Spring", but I'm not surprised, or disappointed in any way. 9 songs and 30 minutes of music is some bands annual output. And rarely as high quality. "Summer" clocks in at 6 songs and 19 minutes, each moment a pleasure. These young ladies do need to pace themselves after all. It is an EP, and there are 2 more to go.

"Praying For The… Continue

Larkin Poe - FTC Stage One, Fairfield CT - July 31,2010

Did not expect to be writing a review of this show. So no photos, no interview, didn't even write down the set list. Not very professional. I was just there to listen to some music. Now I want everyone to know about what I heard.

I was surprised when only 3 members came onstage.

Rebecca Lovell- Vocals, Acoustic Guitar and Mandolin,

Megan Lovell -Dobro, harmony vocals

Daniel Kimbro-Electric Upright Bass.

I do hope nothing nefarious has happened to Mike… Continue

Larkin Poe, "Spring" an EP

It's going to be difficult for me not to get overly effusive with praise for Larkin Poe's 1st CD. This work may not make many "Best" of the year lists, but it has become my favorite. I've listened to it almost daily since I picked it up at Merlefest a month ago. It's been a decade or more since a recording hit me this way.

Feel like I went to a played out mine that lets tourists pan the slag for slivers. The Hope diamond didn't appear suddenly, but I did find a 2 Karat gem of… Continue

Daniel,

Thanks so much. We're gald you like our songs, and we appreciate your input. We've been writing for many years, and this is our first attempt to write for a specific group of people. So far, it's working better than we anticipated. The album should be finished by the end of June, and will be for sale on iTunes, as well as other online sites and available on CD. Again, thanks. Please feel free to post your thoughts anytime, and help us spread the word. We can use all the fans we can get.

To join you have to watch a 2-minute video and then create a profile (like on any social networking site) and then you'll see a list of tasks (all optional) the more you do the more points you get. You use the points to buy stuff like limited ed. vinyl, shirts, hats and so on.
Most of the tasks we do involve posting stuff around the internet to try and tell people about the team (like the email I sent you). We also hang posters around bars and stores that will let us. It's pretty unobtrusive, you only do what you feel like and nobody asks for your credit card info.
In exchange for all that the label sends you every new release, and sometimes old ones too and allows you two tickets to any non-festival show that the LHR musician is headlining, regardless of how many points you have accumulated. I've been to see Bingham and Robert Earl Keen for free.
In the interest of disclosure, I'm also entered into a membership drive contest. The winner gets some kind of big LHR prize. So, if you join spread the word to your friends and maybe you can win it too. My link again is: http://losthighwayrecords.fancorps.com/signup/ref/louisthekingsnake
