How I got in to Americana...

I suppose the recent passing of Richie Hayward of Little Feat got me thinking about my past and particularly the 1970s and how I got into this style of music in the first place. Naturally I got to thinking about the records that introduced me and got me hooked. Not necessarily the best records made in the genre (though some of them probably are) but those that provided me with an introduction into that wide musical territory we sometimes call Americana(whatever that is!). I was going to do this… Continue

Richmond Fontaine 28February Bury

Never seen a bad show by Willy and the boys and this was better than most. Richmond Fontaine ,thankfully , are frequent visitors to our shores(UK) and have built up an enthusiastic and loyal following. They toured to promote "We Used To Think The Freeway Sounded Like A River" only last Autumn and though still obviously promoting this their set wasn't over reliant on the new stuff, excellent though it is.

Sunday's gig at Bury Met was all the better for the presence of Paul Brainard,… Continue

Hey Brendan!

Thanks for pointing me over here... great stuff!
I keep having sneaky peeks at your page, just so I can get the gist of all that goes on.
I keep meaning to add some stuff, but then I get lost in reading through the archive instead haha!

You mentioned the singer songwriter show Friday. here's the scoop on the series of 4:

Coming up next week, songwriters' circle series. I had a ticket to the Lovevtt,Hiatt,Ely show and it was excellent. I was at the last one too but less impressed ; more like 3 solo sets in turn.

Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega and Loudon Wainwright, BBC Four, 10pm, 1st October.

Boo Hewerdine, Chris Difford and Justin Corrie, BBC Four, 10pm, 8th October.

Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt and Joe Ely, BBC Four, 10pm, 15th October

David Gray, KT Tunstall and Ray LeMontagne, BBC Four, 10pm 22nd October

Before each show there will be a 'Singer-Songwriters' at the BBC' compilation, BBC Four, 9pm. This four part-long archive compilation digs deep into the BBC vaults to explore the burgeoning singer-songwriter genre that exploded at the dawn of the '70s and became one of the defining styles of that decade. Programme sources include Old Grey Whistle Test, In concert, Top of the Pops, Sounds for Saturday.
