Anny Celsi’s new single (listen above, join the mailing list and download below) is a cover of an undiscovered gem by Peter Holsapple (The DB’s, The Continental Drifters), sung as a duet with Nelson Bragg (of Brian Wilson’s Band), who also produced the track.
Along with Bragg on acoustic guitar, drums and percussion, it features the talents of Eric Heywood on pedal steel (Son Volt, The Pretenders, Ray LaMontagne), Danny McGough on Wurlitzer, Lowrey and Vox keyboards (Social Distortion, Ramsay Midwood, Tom Waits) and Brett Simons on double bass (The Brian Wilson Band).
Anny and Nelson are on tour in Europe from February 26 through March 29, with shows in Germany, The Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland and England. We'll be joined along the way by Roland Wolff (of Riviera), Duncan Maitland (psych-pop sensation out of Dublin) and the Midlands' own powerpop favorite son, Richard Snow. (Dates below)

"Anny is one of those artists whose lyrics stand on their own even without her melodies. But at the end of the day it’s in her vocals, while hours could be spent discussing which traces of our favourite female singers from the last 50 years can be heard in her songs, Anny does have a sound of her own and she is the owner of one of those voices that you can’t help but fall in love with. Anny is, simply, a superb vocalist." - Pennyblack Music
“… a glorious and lovingly crafted tribute to an era that continues to resonate to this day. In an age of throwaway dance anthems and cookie-cutter R’n’B, it is refreshing to have dedicated artists and musicians remind us of the beauty and wonder of what pop music once was in its heyday. That such wondrous music can still be re-created in our modern times gives me hope and encouragement for the future.” –Kevin Mathews, Bucketfull o’ Brains
“I have a feeling that a good many Maverick readers will readily embrace this excellent album… they don't come much better than Now You Can Hurt Me, which could have been a 1960's DeShannon classic or the country-flavoured First Love Freezes with its Byrds-vibe and lush string arrangement. Yeah, seek out and enjoy.” – Alan Cackett, Maverick
“Had I been able to give it a proper listen sooner, it definitely would have earned a place in my 2009 year-end top 10…Anny Celsi’s beautifully expressive voice…is at once sweet and soulful, with a depth and richness that eludes many singers.” -- John Borack, Goldmine
“Chock full of slightlydelic pop jangle and West Coast harmonies…just a few seconds into the opening title track, and you’re being pulled into the same paisley patterned swirl as the one The Bangles caused…” – Goran Obradovic, Shindig

With the release of Little Black Dress and Other Stories in 2006, Anny Celsi evoked comparisons to artists like Aimee Mann, Lucinda Williams, Suzanne Vega and Jackie DeShannon – all songwriters distinguished by a literary voice that is every bit as vital to the listener as her singing voice. Little Black Dress established Anny internationally as an artist worthy of a second listen. Her next album, Tangle-Free World, was produced by Nelson Bragg, whose regular gig is percussionist/vocalist for The Brian Wilson Band (he appears on Brian’s ‘Smile’ and ‘That Lucky Old Sun’ albums). Power-pop fans will also know Nelson by sight and sound, from his work with The Negro Problem, The Now People, The Quarter After, The Red Button and more. His own self-produced 2006 release Day Into Night received world-wide critical acclaim, with its lush harmonies and acoustic guitar sounds reminiscent of folk-pop artists such as America, Nilsson, The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Continuing in the pop-noir vein of Little Black Dress, Tangle-Free World retains Anny's unique "beatnik cool" feel while expanding her musical landscape, with influences ranging from Jimmy Webb and Lee Hazlewood to The Byrds, Dusty Springfield and Burt Bacharach. Musical contributors include 60’s chanteuse Evie Sands, Phil Parlapiano (John Prine, Grant Lee Buffalo), Carl Byron (Michelle Shocked, Jim Lauderdale), the late Amy Farris (Peter Case, Kelly Willis, Dave Alvin), and members of the Brian Wilson Band.
Anny and Nelson bring their ‘Tangle-Free World’ tour back to Europe this February and March, with dates scheduled in Holland, Germany and throughout the U.K. (see full tour schedule below). Special guests will join the duo at every show. Intimate, truthful, and incisive, Anny’s live shows combine Brill Building hooks with a storyteller’s eye for detail. This is not your typical mellow songwriter evening – these shows will prove just how hard two people can rock an acoustic set!

Anny Celsi’s first European appearance was at Utrecht’s Blue Highways Festival in 2004, as a guest of the late Duane Jarvis. In 2009, upon release of Tangle-Free World, she and Nelson toured England, joined at each stop by a ‘rolling thunder revue’ of some of the U.K.’s most beloved musical artists, including Daniel Wylie, Richard Snow and Paul Steel. In April of 2010 the duo brought their acoustic/roots-pop to Holland and Belgium for the first time. Their timing could not have been worse – the two landed at Heathrow the morning of April 15th, just as Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano caused nearly every airport in Europe to shut down. Several dates had to be canceled as Anny and Nelson scrambled for digs in London, hauled gear on and off the Tube and made new friends among the world-wide community of stranded travelers that sprung up at Heathrow airport, finally catching a ferry to pick up their tour with successful shows in Holland, Belgium and the U.K.
Nearly a year later, Anny and Nelson are back across the pond with a new slate of venues. Don’t miss out on a dip into West Coast musical waters with these two acclaimed American songwriters!
