Saint Hedwig Club at 14297 FM 1346 in Bexar County was my destination for the weekend and I didn't care to call ahead. 80 miles later I found it to be closed down for good. Another fallen angel. What to do now?Last night, listening to coyotes howling outside my moonlit silvery RV and with a raccoon finding it’s way over my roof, I decided this is the weekend to get back on the road to explore more of the magic that lies behind swinging doors and a jukebox. The Suburban is long gone now and…See More

An Invitation to More

We leave Austin shortly after the worst heat has given room for a breeze coming in from the south and we set aim for a lesser known joint about half an hour drive east. All I know about the place is that it was the location for a few scenes in Tobe Hoopers 1974 classic horror movie The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and that there might be a chance for a couple of steps on the dance floor – an inescapable…See More

The Broken Spoke, Austin, Texas

I look out the car window into the emblazoned world that the neon along South Lamar Boulevard paints up. Many treasures are hidden in the shadows of the alleys. While some of them are hard to find if you don't know where to look, some are more well known—and for good reason, too.

Tonight it's two-stepping time and where else to do it if not at the Broken…

Steve's Place, Thorndale, TX

We gassed, braked and steered our way through the backroads of Milam County. With Olle reading the map and Chris keeping the pick-up steady 65 at the wheel, we soon found ourselves in Downtown Texas, Texas. We're on the hunt for a little-known honky-tonk that we’ve heard tell of for a long time. We don’t even know its name, so we call it the "Dream Place" because it sounds to us like the…

Thanks for the kind note. We played once, years ago, at The Forge....across the street from Arky Blue's. It's gone now, and even Bandera's seen changes that amaze me. We'd love to meet you someday at a friendly little honky-tonk in Texas. Maybe have breakfast at Po-Po's in Welfare. Florida's our home, but Texas is a special place.
