About No Depression

This website was launched in Feb. 2009 as a way to continue more than a decade of No Depression's coverage and service to the Americana and roots music community.

However, long before this site was born, No Depression was launched as a quarterly print magazine covering alternative- country music in 1995. The publication was co-founded by Peter Blackstock and Grant Alden, who brought in Kyla Fairchild as a co-publisher shortly thereafter. Over the course of thirteen years, No Depression gradually grew into one of the nation's most prominent and broad-ranging bimonthly music publications until it ceased print operations in June 2008. Along the way, No Depression received Utne Reader Independent Press Awards for Arts & Literature coverage, and was cited as one of the nation's Top 20 magazines of any kind in 2004 by the Chicago Tribune.

Contest: Win a Copy of Leon Russell's Album "Life Journey"

Leon Russell's career as musician and singer-songwriter has spanned roughly a half-century, from his teen years playing in a band with JJ Cale, to backing up everyone from Freddie King to the Byrds and Glen Campbell; collaborating with Newgrass Revival, Nashville Symphony, and Elton John; and, of course, a slew of incredible solo albums.

This week, he releases his 37th album, titled aptly Life Journey, one…

More News about What's Ahead Here at ND

In the week or so since we announced that FreshGrass has acquired No Depression, our growing team has been working hard to make sure this transition goes as smoothly as possible. First off, we would like to echo all of the praise and appreciation that you have expressed regarding the amazing job Kyla and Kim have done over the last five years (and, in Kyla’s case, many more). Their contributions to the roots music world will be felt for a long time to come. The good news is that we do not…

On the Occasion of Our Fifth Anniversary...

Every year for the past five years, we have taken some time at the end of February to thank you all for showing up; to give shouts out to our bloggers and the people who post videos, comment, subscribe to our newsletters, follow us on various other social media outlets, support us with advertising, and so on. This year, we decided to wait a few days before sharing our gratitude and marking the special occasion of our fifth anniversary as a community-focused website, because…

Win a Copy of the New Drive-By Truckers Album

The Drive-By Truckers have always been a favorite here at ND. They appeared on the cover of the print magazine back in 2003 and have been featured in its pages nearly a dozen times in as many years. This week, they're releasing their 12th studio record, English Oceans, and we've teamed up with the fine folks at ATO Records to give away two copies to two lucky ND Community members.

To enter,…

The No Depression Community's Top 50 Favorite Albums of 2013

The past year has been interesting in the Americana and indie roots music realm. Mainstream pop and country music, for example, made stars out of artists like Brandy Clark, Kacey Musgraves, and the Lone Bellow, but you'll see below that those artists were also heavily embraced by the ND community. Reliable favorites and giants of the genre - Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Richard Thompson, Mavis Staples, the Mavericks, Patty Griffin - all delivered exquisite work this year. But there was…

Just noticed you still have some back-issues for sale. I was an original subscriber and am missing only a couple of issues I think. Have been meaning to track the missing issues down for years. I think I will break them out this weekend and see what I need. Hope you still have copies in your archives.

Loved that MAG but I love your 'lectric edition just as much. Keep on keeping on.

Is there a way to stop people posting auto start videos.  There's one starts up now when I go to the ND home page.  Took me a while to work out where it was coming from as it drowned out the music I was listening to at the same time.  Probably one of those street team things. Thanks

Just subscribed today!  First became aware of Marty in the mid seventies at the old Livonia, Georgia bluegrass festivals when he was with Lester's band.  Been a big fan ever since!  All the teen girls (and my wife) went crazy when he was on stage!

I would like to get the word out about the 2012 Oak Grove Folk Music Festival (www.oakgrovefestival.com) on 8/3/12, 8/4/12 & 8/5/12 at the Oak Grove Theater in Verona, VA.

Featured acts include:

John McCuthceon

The Steel Wheels

Tracy Grammer

Sierra Hull & Highway 111

Michael Reno Harrell

Chamomile and Whiskey

This festival, going on for 33 years, is the best small festival you never heard of and would be a good excuse to visit the Shenandoah Valley and Staunton, VA. (www.visitstaunton.com). Come find out why Smithsonian magazine listed Staunton as a top ten small town in the country!
