after all if some plonker in Wisconsin started singing like The Watersons it wouldn't make sense surely?? OH shite they just did anybody heard Fleet Foxes by the way...so is cultural authenticity only as valid as your ipod music these days?

I think I agree with you Danny.
The between song banter if done in a cod US accent makes the whole thing a cabaret act.
There is one band who play in London, who though musically talented completely ruin it with a fake Texan drawl when introducing the songs.
I have walked out more tan once (with the giggles).

Absolutely. There's no excuse for 'remaining in character' between songs.
As someone who does sing with an american accent...I think it because all my musical influences had a certain sound, and the imitation was unconcious. I just sounded better in my head like that.
There are lots of americans who sing with much stronger regional accents that they actually have too...the southern drawl is everywhere...
Check out Keep It Cash (JC tribute) - singer is vocally very convincing, but introduces the songs in a Hull meets Deep South drawl ...
