Who are the 'Best of British'...

Inspired by Trailer Star's thread and always looking to start a good debate/agrument - who are the best British Americana acts?

Who do you recommened we seek out live and on record?

What clubs nights or venues are they playing and what labels are releasing their stuff?

Finally, apart from Bob Harris - where can we hear them on the radiogram(online or otherwise).

If you want cajun/zydeco and swamp'n'roll. may I recommend ourselves - Elvis Fontenot & the Sugar Bees - European zydeco band of the year 2006, played in the USA 3 times, including the Continental Club in Austin and various Louisiana venues including the Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette and twice at the French Quarter festival in New Orleans. Last year we played Kilkenny Rhythm & roots and we're back again this year too. http://www.efsb.co.uk

Friends of ours are the Toy Hearts from Birmingham - probably the best neo-bluegrass band that this country has produced - here's photos I took of them supporting Imelda May recently -

Karen Miller's podcast Miller Tells Her Tale (you can sub via iTunes) has a good smattering of UK - ana. I'd recommend the Endrick Bros and Ben Glover & The Earls. Sign up for venue mailings - if you're in London the Luminaire and Borderline often have good stuff, Union Chapel, Arts Depot etc. Maverick magazine gig guide is a good reasonably wide and up to date listing.

Shameless plug then ... Two Fingers Of Firewater supporting Dale Watson from Austin at the Luminaire on June 24th - and also playing a festival in Hampshire with the Toy Hearts on July 12th. Other dates for TFOF include the Betsey Trotwaood on April 4th and the Green Note, Camden on May 22nd (with Ange Boxall).

Do they have to be current? Cast your mind back 15 years and you'll find the definitive answer - The Rockingbirds.
I agree with the comment about the Endrick Brothers; they are well worth a listen. Anybody mentioned Grand Drive yet ?

There are a couple of features in Mojo and Uncut about the Rockingbirds - after their recent (supposedly one-off) reformation supporting Edwyn Collins , the Mojo article suggests that there will be further dates - gasp - as far north as Leicester! Just checked - The Musician lists them as being on, on 16th April...!

Many thanks for info Elvis. Spooky - I saw the article in Uncut just after I made my comment. Shame Leicester is the furthest point north; pity they can't hit the M1 and keep on driving and stop off at West Yorkshire. I saw the Rockingbirds at the Duchess in Leeds. Somebody threw a bottle at Alan Tyler if I recall. He took it all in good spirits and threw the bottle back!
