I have always liked the Piedmont sound as exemplified by Cephus and Wiggins....

Hey Truersound,
I've seen James McMurtry several times now.......about 3 times at The Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach, which is a pretty cool venue. But yeah, I'd have to agree especially for smaller bands/shows (less than 500 people). The Capitol Ale House music hall in downtown RVA is a pretty kick-ass room to play but I think it's an issue of what kinds of bands they tend to get in there. There are glimmers of hope though; The Taphouse in Hampton Va is going to start having bands and its a really sweet upstairs music room. Also, I think promoters are getting more open minded.

Anybody else go see McMurtry at Attitudes in Blacksburg this past saturday (10/17)? What an amazing show. I actually had a talk with him after the show where he lamented that there weren't very many good places to play in not only SW VA, but most of Virginia. He said he'd been trying to get to Blacksburg for years cause he was raised in Loudon County and half his friends went to VT.
