Thanks so much for the invitation. I'm hoping to get to know more of you and, as well, to contribute more to ND in the near future.
Thank you for the invite! I look forward to expanding my horizons here with my music! I finally got my studio going. Now for the video part! Happy Holidays!
Comment by Terry Roland on December 9, 2011 at 11:28pm @Bruce, Thanks for taking the time to check out those videos I posted. You're right about the Lost Dogs. You won't find them on any radio format..especially Christian. I believe there is a Christian 'underground' of more independent artists like this, but they are hard to find. The guys from LD have been around since the early days of the 'Jesus Movement,' and have been swept aside by most in the mainstream evangelical focused Christian music biz. Thus, they exist with a bare to the bone following of faithful fans who are in some remotely strange way like Deadheads. I chose those three because of the diversity that exists..in style and relgious views....Carrie is as pure-hearted a Quaker you'll find this side of Universalism while Daryl Mansfield is very conservative even while pumps out those passionate licks on the blues harp. And Lost Dogs are somewhere in the middle between conservative and progressive...while all three are just beautiful in the way they express their faith through music.....
Comment by Bruce Borgerson on December 9, 2011 at 7:34pm Nothing new this year that I know of, at least not of this caliber. But some classics I heartily recommend:
Shout Live! - Mike Farris
The Sacred Shakers - (self-titled)
I Know Who Holds Tomorrow - Alison Krauss and the Cox Family
Avalon Sunset - Van Morrison
Comment by Telecaster2 on December 9, 2011 at 7:24pm Looking for a few ideas from the group here. My wife and I have had a tradition for the past few years of giving gospel-ish CD's (that were first and foremost great music) to some of our close friends. Some of the CD's we given in recent years have included:
Downtown Church - Patty Griffin
You Are Not Alone - Mavis Stapels
Soul's Chapel - Marty Stuart
Universal United Church 0f Prayer - Buddy Miller
Salvation in Lights - Mike Farris
The Builder and the Architect - Sandra McCracken
Red Mountain Church - Various *
Indelible Grace - Various *
Usually the CD candidates each year have been pretty obvious. However, this year, I coming up a bit short and am looking for some good suggestions. Any help you can provide, particularly with CD's released this year, would be appreciated.
* Red Mountain Church and Indelible Grace are two hymn projects that have released a series of excellent CD's. They both take old hymns and reset them to new melodies and contemporary instrumentation. Check 'em out via Google - good stuff!
Comment by Bruce Borgerson on December 9, 2011 at 5:33pm Finally got the bandwidth to watch Terry's video postings. Great stuff. Covers all the bases, from blues harp right up there with James Cotton and Paul Butterfield to a a gentle reverie from Carrie that echoes Van's "Into the Mystic." And the Lost Dogs are a great example of that curious divide -- a gospel edge? -- that exists between the secular music industry and what Shane Claiborne calls "The Christian Industrial Complex." I'm not sure what the distinction is, and how you are dubbed "a Christian artist" and fit for only "Christian labels." Very artificial, and it keeps music locked in separate categories, separate disribution, separate promotion. The Lost Dogs are great, and they've been around for years. Why haven't I heard of them? Do they really get airplay on Christian radio? If so, I'm listening to the wrong Christian radio stations!
Comment by Bruce Borgerson on December 8, 2011 at 7:48pm Got it. He's playing Pops Staples' guitar on some cuts. Soul gospel with a country twang.
Comment by Telecaster2 on December 8, 2011 at 7:44pm Just discovered this group in No Depression. Gospel with an Alt-accent is one of my favorite music genres. I look forward to learning more here.
One of my favorite albums in this category is Marty Stuart's "Soul's Chapel". If you haven't heard it before, I highly recommend that you check it out!
Comment by Bruce Borgerson on December 6, 2011 at 4:18pm Welcome aboard John and Terry! Looking forward to checking these videos, but alas I'm stuck in low-bandwidth land. I'm "campsitting" at our rustic church camp, deep in the Rogue River National Forest, where the only available "high speed" Internet connection is via satellite -- at a disappointng 200 kbs max. Mucho buffering. But hey, wilderness solitude is good for the spirit, so I'll just groove on the woods for a few more days.
Comment by John Apice on December 6, 2011 at 2:21pm Thanks for the invite Terry.
If Carrie Newcomer ("Leaves Don't Drop They Just Lets Go") is among the artists the Gospel Edge must be something very special. I am eventually going to try and upload a song others here may have missed. It's called "Hymn" -- by a progressive European band Barclay James Harvest. Believe it or not, not an unlikely choice. The lyrics and music most definitely fit among these great artists and songs in this new category. But, before I do that -- let me know definitely if it's appropriate. This song is posted on YouTube (with lyrics) in many incarnations and Grooveshark (the studio version). Very stirring and haunting live versions. Fans in Europe are very aware of this intense song but many people in America are oblivious. On YouTube alone more than 1 million hits on one live version alone and this song went nowhere in the United States. It most definitely made a spiritual impact on many listeners. BJH have been around since 1966 and they are still performing to this day -- says something about their staying power and quality. But, please -- see if you agree with me before I post. This link below is a clean MP3 studio version and contains the lyrics. But you may feel a live version is more powerful. Let me know. Hope you like this. I can just imagine how powerful and spectacular this song would sound in the hands of the Staples Singers or any traditional Gospel singer or group.
