How 'bouts we start an introductions discussion? Say hi, tell us a little about yourself, and maybe list some of your favorite local musicians, music venues, and restaurants?

Sounds good. My name is Tom Melancon, I go by the name of "Dowward Facing Dude." I write acoustic guitar based alt-country stuff. I also play electric bass and harmonica. I am playing with a few other folks this Sunday night at the Columbia City Theater. My set will be early, about 7:30. I love the Tractor, that's pretty much my favorite venue in town. My favorite local bands right now are Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, the Maldives and The Beautiful Confusion. Thanks for starting the discussion!
Hello all, my name is Jena James. I run a small local music promotions and booking company with my sister - Scorpio Rising. A few of my favorite local musicians include Lee Tyler Post, Kristen Ward, Jesse Sykes (good choice Downward Facing Dude) and Guns of Nevada - I have many others but those are just a few.
I'm not sure if this counts as local, but one of my new favorite venues is the Red Bicycle on Vashon - amazing sushi! During the summer, they open up a large "garage" door behind the stage so the music can flow on down the blvd. The Green Room at the Showbox Market is a fun, intimate venue that I enjoy doing shows at - the staff is amazing!
Eliza - you didn't introduce yourself! That ain't fair! ;)

Hi, I'm Kim. I manage this site, write about roots and country music for Sound magazine, do the About.com folk music site, and freelance for other folks whenever I have spare time I feel I need to fill up. I have a piece in this month's Seattle magazine - pick it up. I also make music and walk all over town for shits and giggles. I just started training for the Rock & Roll half marathon, in case any of you are doing that and looking for a training partner. I could use the motivation. My first training run yesterday took me a whopping 2.2 miles. I have a ways to go.

I mostly hang at the Tractor, although I live on the Hill. I just went to the new Croc last Friday and like it so much better than the old Croc!! I'm looking forward to Damien Jurado/Laura Gibson there next month. I also discovered a great place for gyros near the Croc, called Kebab (since Eliza asked for restaurants). Loving the new Star Anna disc and Zoe Muth's new album, which doesn't have a release date yet. Just discovered Painted Hills, who are great...
Hi, I'm Kyla Fairchild. I'm the publisher of No Depression and pretty much spend all my time and energy these days trying to keep ND alive. Currently working on getting all the archival content from the print publication formatted in a database and a web site built to house it so it can be online for all to enjoy. I've learned a ton, to say the least!

I have two sons age 7 and 15 and a wonderful husband of almost 22 years.

Some of my favorite local bands are Jesse Sykes, Star Anna, Zoe Muth, The Maldives, The Moondoggies, The Tripwires, Mark Pickerel, The Pica Beats, Shim and The Lonely H. I'm sure I'm forgetting many more.

The Tractor, Triple Door and Showbox at the Market are my favorite venues in town.

Hi Jena, I met you at the Dow fundraiser the other night! Nice to see you here on the site! That under promoted venue in Bothell that I was telling you about is The Northshore Performing Arts Center . http://charityadvantage.com/Northshore_Performing_ArtsKICMID/Home.asp

Doesn't look like they have much on their calendar currently, but Justin Townes Earle is playing there in May and so far the show seems to be very under promoted.

Kyla
Hi again Kyla!
I just sent you a message regarding the Northshore Performing Arts Center! I guess I need to get in here and check replies more often!
Thanks for the info on them...I'm excited to see Justin there, and yes, it does look to be very under-promoted. A friend of mine is a huge Earle (both father and son) fan and he had no idea he was going to be here - at three different places, no less.
So thank you again!
I wish you the best of luck in this journey and I hope to see you again soon!
Hello, I'm Clay Bartlett. I used to be local (Ballard) until 6 years ago when we moved up to Port Townsend. I'm one those singer/songwriter types (Clay Bartlett and His Snide Remarks=Americana stuff), but used to play bass in bands in Seattle, The Cheap Ones, Gerald Collier and the Low Tar Taste, and the occasional Supersuckers country show or tour. I've been married nearly 15 years and have two amazing daughters (5 3/4 and 8 3/4).

Although they rarely play out I really like Evangeline, North Twin is good, the suckers, Christy McWilson, and um ... Clay Bartlett. But again I live in Port Townsend and have the kids so there is so much I don't know about.

I love the backstage (oh wait that's gone) well there's the tractor, haven't been to the new croc but i'm a little skeptical as I've heard that they are only sometimes using Jim (the best soundman in Seattle) and not at all his system. (poor syntax).

Favorite restaurants are the Kokeb (ethopian), Piecora's Pizza (pizza), and The India Bistro (i believe that they have indian food there)

PS hi Kyla and give my best to ron and the family
Yeahm okay, I will introduce myself too.

I'm Eliza Jane Manoff. I have been writing, singing, recording, and performing songs for about 3 years now, but I've played the guitar for most of my life. Never been in any bands to speak of. Don't have wife nor kids. Got a pretty great dog, though...

I like dogs, and crows, and animals in general. I like to read things and think about things. And eat things. There's lots of good things to eat in Seattle, particularly Vietnamese, Thai, and Japanese things.

Oh dear, I'm not very good at this introducing myself stuff. See, this is why I've been putting it off. I think I'll stop writing now.
Hi! My name is Zera Marvel...yes, it's my real name! I've been playing music for over 12 years here in Seattle. I just released my first solo CD called, Birds And Bullets Fly.

I love playing at the Tractor, and I have a show coming up there on June 24th - opening for Tom Brousseau. I usually play with my full band which consists of:

GRAIG MARKEL: electric guitar, lap steel
GREGG PANTO: banjo, guitar
JON HYDE: pedal steel guitar
DORAN BASTIN: bass
JOE PATTERSON: drums

I've been lucky enough to play shows with some of my favorite local musicians including: Jesse Sykes, Star Anna, Shane Tutmarc and J. Tillman.

I am married to Graig Markel. He recorded and co-produced my CD at his studio, The Recovery Room:

We have two cats...Henry and Lola, (Henry is the black and white cat in my photo) they are like our children. I love to cook, so we eat at home quite a bit. We also love Vietnamese vegetarian Pho from Than Brothers and beer and tacos from El Chupacabra!
Hello! My name's Brian Ledford. One more singer-songwriter for the group :-)

Came to Seattle a dozen years or so by way of Austin, Lubbock (where I started writing and playing music) and DFW where I was born and raised.

Put out a couple EPs with bands over the last seven years. Finally got off my butt to record a bunch of my solo material with local producing wiz Matt Brown. That record, truth & love, releases on june 16th, and I'm doing a record release show at Marsbar next saturday the 6th with couple other great roots, americana acts, Lindsay Fuller and Boxcar Rebellion.

I was lucky enough to have some great players on the record: Jon Hyde, Wayne Horvitz, Keith Lowe, Andy Roth, James McAlister, Zoe Muth...and through a buddy of mine down in austin, got Redd Volkaert to play lead on the title track.

Starting to book my calendar out (working with Mama N'Em Productions) and, depending how the record's received, do some touring behind it. Anyone want to share shows let me know!

Hello,

(just CCing this from my profile here)...
Glad I stumbled upon this site. My name is Gregory Paul. I'm new around these parts (though I toured through a few times around six years ago), and really like it here. Originally from Upstate NY, I've always wanted to live on the west coast. Back East I was used to being (mostly) a full time musician (whatever that means). But out here I'm back to square one. I'd love to meet some like minded folks and start playing some gigs again. I've gone down and played with the oldtime social at Conor Byrne a few times which was great. But I'd like to do some solo shows, and also put together a duo or trio of oldtime music primarily for gigging. Back East I had a few successful groups which were a lot of fun. I've worked with Richard Buckner and played shows with a lot of different folks all over the place. Looking forward to crossing paths with some new people here.
Cheers,
- gp

Howdy, I'm Derek. I play electric bass in an alt-country band called Lucky Suns. I'm also an attorney (entertainment law and family law!). Originally from Colorado, married without kids, but we have three cats.

Some of my favorite local musicians are Sera Cahoone, Rainieros, North Twin and Jeff Fielder. I find there are a lot of good local acts and enjoy either playing with them or going to see them.

I like Slims Last Chance and the High Dive. Oddly enough, I live on the Eastside and there's a little pub called "Dinos" that apparently is hosting Star Anna this weekend. I didn't even know they had live music.

I look forward to chatting with y'all from time to time.
Hey..Dave MacDonald here. I'm managing Star Anna and The Laughing Dogs. Star and the boys played Dino's last night with Gin Betty! because it's my neighborhood tavern and we thought it would be fun. It was! The place was jammed with a lot of new faces and had a huge night. They don't normally do music but I think we'll do it again some day.
