Welcome to the Rocky Mountain music group site of No Depression!

My name is Dutch and I live in Denver, Colorado. I grew up here in Colorado since I was 2 years old but was born in Detroit, Michigan. I am music writer for a local Denver weekly newspaper and a freelance writer for several other music related publications region and nationwide.

I also love playing music and had my 15 minutes of (almost) fame playing drums in a promising country starlet's band back in 2005. She was a reality TV star on Country Music Television and went on to produce a video. I ended up getting to play music all over the USA culminating in playing the annual CMA Music Fest in Nashville and the Taste of Colorado in my own hometown. That was pretty neat. These days I jam with a rockabilly / blues rock band and play Colorado country (as we call it) with other buddies here and there.

I have been a fan and avid reader of No Depression magazine since the early 00's when I discovered it hiding behind a copy of Razorcake (the punk zine) at a downtown Denver bookstore. I devoured this new discovery. I couldn't believe how many cool bands existed that played the kind of music I loved! This is back when No Depression was only published 4 times a year. Talk about having to wait to get your fix, huh?

Anyhow, I've been lucky to have been a small part of the No Depression family for many years now. I've been helping spread the word and educating americana music fans that there is something out there that covers and preaches about the music we all love. I am happy to be a part of this next phase in the incredible journey of No Depression. This new community based website will allow all of us to share and interact with each as never before.

Now we get to read what is on your mind! I say bring it on!

your friend in music,

alright my Colorado friends, you read it here first:

LYONS, COLORADO  February 9, 2011  Planet Bluegrass today announces the next round of lineup additions for the 38th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival, including Sarah McLachlan, Mumford & Sons, Steve Earle & the Dukes, Old Crow Medicine Show, Abigail Washburn, and The Head & The Heart. The roots music festival is held the Summer Solstice weekend, June 16-19, in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Tickets, camping, and lodging are available now at 800-624-2422 or
Since its founding in 1974, Telluride Bluegrass has consistently featured adventurous acoustic music well beyond traditional bluegrass. This year's lineup is no exception as these new additions join Robert Plant & Band of Joy, Emmylou Harris, The Decemberists, Bela Fleck & the Original Flecktones, and many others on the festival's main stage.
At the core of the festival are the many artists who have defined the Telluride Bluegrass sound since the beginning - including Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Peter Rowan, Tim O'Brien, and Edgar Meyer. These legendary musicians, many of whom celebrate more than 25 years at the festival, return to Telluride each year to collaborate with the many new artists on each year's lineup. As well, they are featured on the festival's opening night as The Telluride House Band, led by the King of Telluride, 37-year festival veteran and 3-time Grammy-winning mandolinist Sam Bush.
The 38th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival lineup...
* Robert Plant & Band of Joy
* Telluride House Band featuring Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Bryan Sutton & Stuart Duncan

In 2007, Telluride Bluegrass became the first American festival to become 100% carbon neutral. The festival employs carbon offsets and renewable energy to offset the entire festival's operation as well as the travel emissions for the more than 10,000 festivarians and performers.

Working on a draft of a song, "Cross Roads", here in the Bitterroot Valley, in the shadow of the Bitterroot Mountains (a spur off the Rocky Mountains). I'm open for some constructive criticism on this draft... before I go remake it with the many changes I am thinking of. I welcome your comments on the tune... here is the link:

Thanks, in advance... for your time and for your ear...
