Finally caught up with the tour at the Howard Room, Bedford on Saturday night. First time I’d seen the new (to me) incarnation of PG and had held off buying the record so not altogether sure what to expect.

After supports from Eric Brace & Paul Cooper and Sarah MacDougall (with Awna throughout and the whole of PG for her last song), Po Girl kicked off with the title track from Deer In The Night. Apprehension about the new set-up proved unfounded. The axis of Allison and Awna, ably and more than supported by Benny (you name it he plays it) and JJ (drummer), swapped leads throughout the show. The songs were mainly from the new record and Home To You with a couple of new ones thrown in. Allison gave a very moving intro to Le Partisan on the 65th anniversary of D-Day. The whole band (JJ excepted) swapped instruments song by song and Allison coaxed a blast of feedback from her banjo that any metaller would have killed for. They were called back for two encores; the second with Sarah MacDougall (who smiles all the time she sings; how?).

A great evening and one which I’d hoped to repeat tonight at the Half Moon but had to give the ticket away. Promisingly Po’ Girl promised (ish) to be back next year, have a live album due in a couple of months and have the songs written for the next studio record.

It’s been 2 years since the last shows and I’d forgotten how much I liked this group live. Ink the provisional dates now please.

I got my copy of "Maverick" magazine this week and they've only got 2 of the shows listed (Maidstone and Nottingham). They do an e-mail out of tour dates as well as putting them in the print version. You should send a list to them at: editor@maverick-country.com
