Sightings of the lesser spotted Phil Lee have been rare in recent years, particularly this year, while he has been holed up in the studio with Richard Bennett and plethora of Nashville's coolest cats producing and perfecting this wonderful album.

There have been more sightings across the country in recent months, some say due to the cold Nashville winter getting to his tiered old bones and forcing him to go where the weather suits his clothes.

While he gets into training to stave off the fear of deap vein thrombosis on the flight to Europe this summer for Festivals, Radios Shows, Concerts and House Concerts.

We need to know where and when you have spotted him with a description to please.

Not exactly a road sighting, but I did spot the mighty king of love in this righteous DJ tribute video:

Maybe if we could get him off the i-phone and to a real computer he might share some memories of Duane with us. I would love to hear his stories.

Have a good weekend, y'all. Play some Phil Lee music. LOUD.
There is a cowboy hat with legs here on Eric Braces site could that be Phil Lee? http://community.nodepression.com/photo/with-phil-lee
why, i think it might be... yes! it IS Phil Lee! and that looks like Tom Mason on guitar. and none other than Tommy Womack in the hat there in the audience. wow. :-)
Speaking of house concerts, here is a retelling of our fun weekend with Phil and Jan King as told by my good buddy Jay Johnson of Honky Tonk House Concerts in Streetsboro, Ohio.

I Saw Him Three Times Before He Died...

…on the “I Saw Him Before He Died Tour” so let’s take a brief look back at the Phil Lee in Ohio weekend before we turn our attention to the July 11th Eric Taylor show at Honky Tonk House Concerts, and he’s still not dead! I snuck out of work about an hour and a half early on Friday, June 5, 2009, to make my way to Kent. Phil Lee was appearing at the first after-work party of the season in the courtyard of the Kent Stage and the Sky Blue Cowboy himself, Jim Dime, was opening so I didn’t want to be late. I ran into Phil and his lovely guitarist (who I and several others developed a crush on over the course of weekend. I won’t rat out the others, but I confessed my crush to Tammy and she was cool with it. In fact, she had one too! Think wholesome, not twisted, you losers!) Jan King on the sidewalk next to the Kent Stage. I escorted them to the courtyard, a veritable garden spot reminiscent of a tropical paradise created by Tom Simpson. I know it probably looked like a bit of an alley to those of you that lack vision. I took Jan King next door to meet Brandroid and show her the headquarters of the official corporate sponsor of Honky Tonk House Concerts, Spinmore Records!

Back in the courtyard we ran into Tom Ball, of his own mind fame, and his way better half, Christine. I started drinking warm beer like it was going out of style because I couldn’t wait for Tom Simpson’s way better half to get back with the ice. My beer guzzling frenzy was soon interrupted by one of the weekend’s highlights, the opportunity to hug on Rico and Pineapple Denise, of Hillbilly Haiku House Concert fame. Our friends had driven all the way from Nashville to take in the festivities! If it looked like dear friends that hadn’t seen each other in way too long greeting one another, it was! Jim Dime played a fine opening set rife with Hank Williams and originals that sounded like stuff we listened to on “Hi Fi night” back in the day. I love Jim’s voice and the man himself is all around solid. You can trust him with your gal or your new Cadillac. Soon Phil Lee and Jan King took the stage and mesmerized the small, but enthusiastic crowd with a “typical Phil Lee show.” Don’t be mislead by the “typical Phil Lee show” description because typical for Phil Lee includes humor, choreographed dance steps, great guitar work and songs culled from a satchel full of ‘em that scale the rarified air the heights of which only great songwriters can attain. Most songwriters get a kink in their neck from craning it to see the heights to which Phil’s songs aspire and attain. Personally, the Friday highlight was “Carl’s Got Louise.”

We (Phil, Jan, Tammy, PBR and me) adjourned to the Roadhouse in Streetsboro for dinner after the show. PBR? Well, you know my affinity for giving people nicknames ala Old Paul, New Paul and the Dancin’ Girl? PBR is some scalawag from Pittsburgh named Brad. Pittsburgh Bradà PBR. It makes sense to me… Plus, he brought me a case of Iron City Saturday night, but I digress… We learned two things at dinner. First, well, I forget the first. But second, Phil’s stage name from his “blue movie” days was “El Longo Prongo.” That little tidbit came to light after the waitress delivered me the biggest onion ring I ever saw causing me to exclaim “look at this onion ring! It’s like a porno onion ring!” I ate it.

It was good to see so many familiar faces Saturday night at the honky tonk house. Susan, who I’ve yet to hang a moniker upon, PBR, The Dancin’ Girl, Donna, Cindy, Larry, etc. Maybe “Tallboy” can suggest a nickname for you, Susan? Tallboy is the name by which Steve will henceforth be known here in the honky-tonk house. It’s derived from the relative size of a 16 ouncer (a pounder or tallboy) as compared to a 12 ouncer. Every moment of Saturday’s show was a highlight for me from the first note Chris Castle played to the last manic note Tony Schaffer plunked on the piano at the end of a raucous jam session. Andy Ruddock, of Brown Dog Films, was there and filmed some great high definition video of both Chris and Phil. …and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention what a great fucking guitar player Joe Linstrim is. This email to Phil’s manager, Mary Sack, sums up many of my feelings;

There are times when the sense of excitement and anticipation for an upcoming concert are truly unfair to the artists inasmuch as often the show itself cannot live up to the expectations of the mind’s eye. It happens with many significant events in life such as weddings, graduations, etc. That was the fear heading into the Phil Lee at HTHC weekend. The reality was that the reality of Phil Lee and Jan King outstripped anything we could’ve imagined. Our minds simply weren’t fertile enough to conceive of what a satisfying musical experience awaited us. Chris Castle, Tony Schaffer and Joe Linstrom played a terrific opening set causing Phil to quip that “it clearly says in my contract that the opening act has to suck!” I don’t know what more can be said about Phil and Jan- their chemistry is palpable. They had people laughing, crying (me during “I Hope That Love Always Knows Your Name”) and occasionally jaw-dropped awed during some of their guitar work. At the end Chris, Joe, Tony and Bob (an audience member) joined Phil and Jan for a set of rock and roll. I got drunk and threatened Phil with bodily harm if he wouldn’t play a Chuck Berry song, but that’s a regular occurrence at HTHC and Phil took it in the spirit of love with which it was intended.

We were running on empty by Monday’s show at the Town Fryer, but we couldn’t pass up a chance to see GS Harper, Andrew Zeager, Jan King and Phil Lee. Susie Porter was her usual gracious, welcoming self and we had big fun, but couldn’t stay for the whole show on a school night.

Quantcast Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack both boast amazing underground resumes. Kimbrough (2005 Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year) and Womack (Two-time winner of the Nashville Scene Best Song Award) first came together in 1992 in the bis-quits. They discovered a musical and personal kinship which they have struggled amongst other commitments – to get back to. With the breakup of the bis-quits in 1994, Kimbrough went on to be lead guitarist in Todd Snider & the Nervous Wrecks, since producing several of Snider’s records, and toured extensively with Rodney Crowell. Tommy Womack is touring Solo in the UK In August starting at Belladrum Festival on August 7th. Publicity Rob Ellen www.medicinemusic.co.uk
