I've painted houses, apartments, cars, lawn furniture, and a couple toenails here and there. It must have been the smell of the paint that gave me wierd ideas in my head that somehow turns to song lyrics. Is that odd? I salute the 4" brush and the women who put their makeup on with one !!
On a serious side..., aren't both the same? One is just visual while the other is auditory. The question is.., can we make them reach the kenesthetic side in the viewers and the listeners?
Great conversation. Thanks for letting me join in, L

Hey everyone! I'm new to the site, but I joined this group because I'm a painter and a banjo player. I went to painting school and I had a lot of professors who played in string bands or made music as well, so I guess this is a common thing for creative types. Oh, if you want to see my paintings I just made a website for them (the images might load slow, still working that out):
www.michael-meredith.com

and my americana/blues rock/bluegrass music can be found here:
http://hopewellexchange.bandcamp.com/

not sure how much of a connection the two have, it's not easy to describe. I think I like making music and visual art because they do different things. Also, looking at a painting might take 30 seconds to a few hours to soak it all in, where as music is so immediate. Great to see this group on the site, hope everyone's doin well!

I used to play with a guitar player who described writing and arranging music for a band in particular as "painting with sound." He didn't know how right he was about that. I look at all of it as different rooms in the same house. As a singer/songwriter I spend most of my time in that room, because it's my favorite. But when I get tired of it I go visit the writing room or the painting/drawing room.
All of these activities seem to speak to each other for me...sometimes if I can't seem to work something out musically I go draw a face or a flower or a shoe...or go write about a completely unrelated topic. When I return to...the music room...I often find that the blockage has worked itself out. There are also times when taking a nap does the same thing...

Hey!

Thanks very much to both of you for the very kind words...

Nancy ~ This is actually the last piece I ever did, I was 18 or 19 when I did that one... painting used to be what music and poetry is to me now. Perhaps one day I'll put together a website though. I might even pick it up again, it was years ago though.

Shannon~ Thanks very much for checkin' out the music as well, and I'm honored that you like my painting as well.

Love!

~Amadeo
