Last night I caught Butch Hancock's set in the Pastures of Plenty at the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah. He was amazing. I admire all the musicians who come to the festival and play, but, at least last night, Hancock seemed to me to capture Woody's spirit, both musically, and socially, as well as anyone ever has.
Later, we had the pleasure of hanging around with Butch and a whole motel-full of other musicians trading songs in the "musician's motel" parking lot, til at least 2:30 am. I became an instant fan of StoneHoney. Man, those guys can sing!
Love the spirit of brotherhood, and fellowship, and the loving tribute to a great American artist, that permeates the scorching atmosphere of this annual celebration of Guthrie's birthday.
The weather's almost always hotter'n hell during Woodyfest, but man, it's been crazy hot in Oklahoma this year. I've come to kinda like that. Makes it a more vivid memory.
See you all there next year!
