Is there a genre called instrumental roots music? Who are your fave artists in this category? What venues are interested in this type of music?

What type of music do the Punch Brothers play?

I have a new instrumental roots CD by the Tim Posgate Hornband called Banjo Hockey.

Surely, there's plenty instrumental versions of folk songs, in old-time and string-band music, and the entire category of fiddle tunes would qualify-don't know if I'd call it a genre, cuz there's many roots genres that feature instrumentals at least occasionally. Bluegrass has always had a strong instrumental tradition, with a soloing format similar to jazz. Dixieland is string band music's city slicker cousin of sorts. My experience, and I find it mildly annoying, is that venues other than festivals tend to treat instrumental music as 'digestion music'; they wanna shove it in the background while people are eating. I surely could munch on an ear of corn while listening to say, The Kentucky Colonels, but I think giving them my full attention would be more rewarding.

I can't say as I've heard of the Punch Brothers, so I've no opinion, there, perhaps someone with bigger ears will chime in.

Banjo Hockey is a provocative title, what do you use for a puck, cornpone?
