I have just joined this group at Chris's invitation. Fact is, I haven't live in Houston for years. I did visit over the holidays, and  I even located the newer  Hobbit Restaurant (formerly the Hobbit Hole).  Sorry, off topic.  I'll need to catch some live music next time I'm in the Big H.

Chris and I have reminisced about the Anderson Fair and Montrose scene of the 70's. I lived in

the neighborhood back then, and  I could walk to some of the music venues and catch acts like Townes and Shake Russell.

Later  I moved to Austin, where I caught some of the same acts-- Townes and Shake, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, etc.

I now live in El Paso, and I am belatedly getting into Tom Russell's music (He lives here, too). I sure miss the large numbers of musicians and venues of my previous locations.

The topic thread  I would like to start here is a "Where are they now?" discussion, hopefully tracing the physical moves and musical evolution of former Houston- scene artists.

This isn't exactly on topic, but sort of...cool blog in the Houston Press...

Hey, thanks for the time travel experience. Yep. Sand Mountain and the Old Quarter. I heard about these places while still in high school. Also, the Catacombs. Not really a folk place, but an older co-worker and luminary who lived in Sin Alley, wore an Elvis-style pompadour, and drove a Vette, worked there off-and-on and he snuck me in a few times( Hey Paul, if you're still out there, remember the kid from Pasadena who worked with you at Flagg Bros. in Sharpstown?) Saw the Fever Tree and maybe The 13th Floor Elevators there.

Thankfully, many of the artists who I remember from the old days are still out there making fine music. Some still in Houston, some scattered about. A few have been lost or just had to find other ways to make a living.

Here's an old favorite I found recently on youtube:
