I think it depends on how you play things atborder control. Marybeth is right, strictly speaking. but if you are coming through immigration, carrying a guitar , and you're asked if you're working when you're here, lots of people will just say they've brought their guitar to play with friends.
if you're an internationally recognisable star on five continents this won't work, but it seeems ok for most people. last year a couple of touring friends who stopped with me said that this worked fine for them - and if you're playing mostly house concerts and whathaveyou, one of the hosts will vouch for you.

Strictly speaking, you do....I have heard stories of U.S. singer-songwriters turned away at the border. You need someone to sponsor you.

Do I need a work permit to entertain at UK festivals, house concerts, or other venues?

Hi folks. I am from NC in the USA. I am touring Europe in May, June, July and maybe September, and Oct. My website is www.jerryharmon.com I will be performing solo. Are there any brothers or sisters out there can recommend any festivals, venues ,etc, for an authentic Appalachian Mountain singer, songwriter, guitarist and storyteller in the UK or Mainland Europe. I will sure be grateful, and will assist you with anything I can in the USA. Jerry Harmon

Hey all, I was wondering if anybody out there is using SongQuarters.com or other similar pitching sites/services to try and market their songs? If so, it'd be helpful to hear about their experiences with them, what/who best to avoid, other tips ... ? Thanks a lot, Niels

Hey Grae, thanks for the tips, I'll google them. I'm actually German and live in Munich, not too many venues here though for our kind of music... The only place I've ever played in Amsterdam is the KHL, but apparently they're always fully booked, these two sound promising, so thanks! Niels

Hi Niels
Try Miriam Feuth at Mulligans and Blue Nose Sundays - I think they both have websites. Whereabouts in Germany are you staying - I might be able to suggest somewhere there too.
Good Luck
Grae J.
