I wonder what the Dead were thinking as they hooked up the 2 track reel to reel for their first gig. And continued to do so for 30 years. A whole lot of it being releasable material, they started in the vinyl era, I'm thinking maybe Jerry would listen to each show to see how he could improve something, but who knows, anyway, besides that, there are tons of othere great recordings going around because of their policey to allow a tapers zone, and these guys made good quality stuff, towards the end with digital taping, they probably were even better.
Now, They are doing something behemoth, well, with the help of Rhino Records and Warner Brothers who owns Rhino now,(kinda something, they are back with the first label that ever hired them, Warner Brothers, who originally put out the big bucks for the 22 show Europe 72 tour, recording everything on 16 track and making a 3 album collection ,which is the album that turned me on to the Dead in 72. This project will cost you $450 ,originally , only going to make 7000 box sets with a fancey case, book and other goodies, butbefore they would do it, they had to have atleast 3500 folk sign up for a set. They sold out 7000 sets in ten days. Since it went over so big, now, if you want, you can get, just the 72 CDs for the same price. Hopefully some day, they will break it down so you can pick a show you want and buy it. They are aiming for a September release.
What is your favorite box set? One thing I wish the Dead would do is take something like Europe 72 and make a SACD out of it, that would be great. The Allman Brothers released Fillmore 71 live and Eat A Peach on SACD and they are awesome.
