Americana and roots music - No Depression

The Americana and roots music authority

Session Americana is a local treasure in the Boston Music Scene. They are made up of some great musicians and always put on a great show, having as much fun around their table as everyone in the audience.

Here's the description from sessionamericana.com

Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the "table", featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. The group has grown from a rag tag jam at a local pub to a regional institution, playing gigs from church coffee houses to urban nightclubs to regional festival tents to large halls.

Upcoming shows:

* Tue residency (Dec 1,8,15,22) @ Lizard Lounge
* Sat, Dec 12 @ Club Passim (7pm & 10pm)

Note: Lizard Lounge shows always SELL OUT. They offer 50 tickets online and 60 tickets when the doors open at 8:30.

Session America is Billy Beard, Jim Fitting, Sean Staples, Dinty Child, Ry Cavanaugh and Jon Bistline, usually with special guests that are too numerous to list.

Just got this mail regarding THIS TUESDAY's show at the Brattle. I believe that it was sent by Ry, who is spending a year (or so) in Ireland. He'll be back for the shows listed previously.

session fans unite!

Are any of you into this new fangled "social networking"? if so, we could use some help letting Session fans and music lovers know about the show we're doing this Tuesday at the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square.

Billy is the only one in the band with a facebook account. Jim still doesn't even have a cell phone. I still think social networking means going to bars - which actually works, but the bars I've been in recently are all across the Atlantic - a tough sell crowd for the Brattle show.

Whichever way you let your friends know about events you're going to or bands you like, please send some info about the show. Its a two hundred seat room and there are still close to one hundred seats left. No one is panicking, but it would be nice to sell a few more seats before Tuesday!

I'm truly looking forward to their show at the me&thee on Friday night. I'd love all the Americana fans to come out and support our coffeehouse in getting this type of music to the 'burbs! Yeah, there's plenty of it in Boston and Cambridge but not many venues on either shore of Boston or in metro West support it. Coming out will give us reason to continue booking shows like this!

Thanks in advance for your support.

Just to follow up on Kathy's post, if you have not made the trip to Marblehead to see a show at the Me and Thee Coffeehouse, do yourself a favor and go! It is a great venue with an incredible sense of community and artists love to play the venue. Also, Marblehead is a great place to get way for a night or weekend.

OK, I'm IN! I'm meeting up with a friend from Salem and we plan to see the show. It will be a first to M&T for me, but it looks like a nice concert series and I've heard good things. I'm a fan of a similar music series at Studio 99 in Nashua, NH and the Hush Hush Sweet Harlet series at the Red Door in Portsmouth, NH.

Fwiw, I saw the Virginia duo The Honey Dewdrops at both places this week. They're playing Hogfarm Studios in Biddeford tonight, which also looks like a very cool place. I think they'd be great at Me&Thee, next time they visit New England.

Thanks for coming to the show, Jeff. It was pretty special, eh? I'll look into the Honey Dewdrops....and so cool that you know Elise!

I am still learning my way around this place and finally started working (ugh! but grateful to have a job as it certainly makes more things possible on the entertainment side of things) so I do hope to go to a show there soon. I am used to Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill for shows and honestly I can't imagine going to Marblehead is any different than a trip to Chapel Hill from Raleigh. I will not miss Fred Eaglesmith, I can assure you of that. I have only seen 1 show since coming here really ( James McMurtry w Jonny Burke at Johnny D's). I did go out to meet some people on the list and the act we went to see didn't show but I wrapped up in meeting everyone. I am in no way ignoring any areas, I am just getting my feet on the ground from such a big move and now going back to work after being a stay at home mom...you know? Anyway, I have read incredible things about me&Thee and Session Americana so I look forward to going eventually. My obstacle now is finding a babysitter so my husband is with me. We have each been to a show but not together unfortunately.

Just curious, how far of a drive is Marblehead from say...Cambridge...?

I wish I could support every venue every night. Believe me, I am terrified of what the recession is doing to live music. Most musicians I have known have made just enough money to get to make it to the next show and with some discipline (and generous friends who give them free places to stay etc) put a little aside but it's still barely making it..then came the gas prices and they were suffering but making it from show to show without the extra change but now it's just harder for fans to afford to go to all the shows they would like to much less buy the merch, etc which is what helps the venue and musicians keep going. Not to mention this is an expensive place to live anyway as I am sure you are all aware or maybe everyone is used to it but we definitely notice. I am not complaining as I am grateful to be here but it is hard to get used to the prices of shows ( it's not just different from Raleigh, NC but it is different than NYC..show prices go up as soon as it hits New England which I would assume comes with what it takes to keep a club open in an expensive area. I don't think anyone who is as committed to bringing great music to the area like Me&thee is expecting to get rich-just keep the doors open.

Kathy, Me& Thee has been around for a while, right? have you noticed a change in attendance and spending or do you think it's the same..? I am really curious. I watched a very dated documentary about the Boston music scene and how the Boston Music venues/clubs were being priced out of the city (this was old but they predicted things pretty well) and how it would effect the music scene. Like I said, dated but still relevant.

Sorry, I am going waaayyy off topic but I have been thinking about this a lot since getting settled in. I am also in an industry that is freaking me out since it involves really taking a close look at the spending and risk factors of almost every kind of business, particularly small ones in Mass...to be honest I do not know how a lot of places are staying open when I see this data. So, as I said, i wish so much I had the freedom to just go out anytime I wanted to and support all the great music venues here but it just isn't as easy. I do hope as we get settled in more and more, my husband and I can go out and enjoy all this city has to offer. For now, I can assure you I will be at the Fred Eaglesmith show. He is a do-not-miss for me and a rare treat in the South so I am really looking forward to that.

Shutting up...Ali

I'm glad I made it. I've seen Session Americana (once with Rose Polenzani) and they always put on a good show. Although they're a bit much more lively when beer is involved! Still not sure if it's good or bad karma to sing along with "Born Again" in a church...

M&T is celebrating their 40th year, which is a phenomenal accomplishment. I hope it's there for at least 40 more. It is a great listening venue and a very supportive community. It reminded me a bit of Tupelo Music Hall, although on a smaller scale and in a church.

To answer Ali, I think it's about 40-45 minutes from the Cambridge/Boston area. I use google (type in the town or the complete street address) to get directions. It will show you a map of where it is.

It really is nice when you get there. My friend, who lives in Salem, said that she feels like she's "on vacation" when she's in Marblehead. We walked around town before/after and hardly saw a car. Much different from Cambridge or even Salem, which is one town over.

I'm most interested in seeing Eilen Jewel Band on Dec 11. She's also playing at Johnny D's on Nov 7.

Yes, the me&thee is very much a LISTENING room.... We had our best year in over a decade last year. I like to think that it's because I book the best of the best and try to make each show unique in some way, shape, or form.

By the way, it's a family friendly venue so you don't need a babysitter! If your kids behave, we welcome kids.

This Friday we have two spectactular blues players---Pat Wictor and Jon Shain. If you've never seen them...you must!

Session Americana is doing a TUE night residency in December at Lizard Lounge. The dates are Dec 1, 8, 15 and 22. These shows will surely sell out, so you should buy tix online or be sure to get there BEFORE the doors open at 8:30.

Here's some more helpful info from their email list:

-Tix available online at www.brownpapertickets.com 50 per show available online.
- Doors are at 8:30 and 60 tix are available at that time, so come by and grab a ticket then if you can't get on online.
-The place usually turns over around 11, so if you have trouble getting in come by late.

I got tix for the Dec 22 (last) show myself.
Maybe see you there?

The advance tickets for all of the Lizard Lounge shows are sold out. You'll want to arrive before 8:30 (or after 11), if you'd like to go. I'll be at the Dec 22 show myself.

But, tix are still available for the Passim shows THIS Saturday (Dec 12 7pm and 10pm). They have some special great guests. Here's the info from their email list:

There are still tickets left for Session Americana's annual Club Passim Holiday show. These shows are always fun, loose events. Beer and wine are now served at the club.
Guests scheduled are Rose Polenzani, Melissa Ferrick, Sarah Borges, Merrie Amsterberg, and Peter Linton.

Tickets available at www.clubpassim.org
